Who/what were they?
Got a pic, post it up.
Mine were these Blood Claws bought around 1993 from a Virgin Megastore shop in Dublin. I think they cost about 18 punts at the time. Still got the (rough) original paint scheme on them.
A bit of an unlucky unit being honest, never seem to get the luck of the dice!

I think the first actual 40K models I owned were...the five-man plastic Space Marine box (it mirrored the plastic push-fit marines from the 2nd edition starter box). I can't find a picture of the box online.
While we're on the subject - is there a collected website anywhere which hosts pictures of the GW boxed products over the years?

What the youngsters today would call a wraithlord, But was back then the Banshee class Eldar dreadnought (still one of my all time favourites). Unfortunately it was lost in The Great House Robbery of 2001 (along with over 8000pts of lizardmen...grrrr).

I keep pictures of my first completed mini in my gallery. It was a dreadnought. Still my favorite all-time model, sad they aren't viable. My first set of minis though was the Ork half of battle for Vedros back when it released.

I got a box of Termagants, a box of Genestealers, and a Hive Tyrant all at the same time for my first purchase. First ones I painted were the Genestealers. No pics, because the only electronic records I could've kept at the time were on floppy disks

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

20 plastic Cadian* shocktroopers. They came in one (1) single box. And I swear it was cheaper than 10 such minis now days.
... And some metal officers and/or special weapons? Can't remember if I bought them at the same time or later.
Of course, these were not my first miniatures. Not even close.
*Not actually from Cadia.

Mine was a group purchase we doled out, RT-01 plastic marines.
The first figure I bought for myself I think was a metal “techmarine” - it was a regular-looking beaky marine with an oil can/torch welder in one hand.

In summer 87 I got a handful of pre-release stuff to paint for the Broadmarsh GW shop and took some of my payment in scrap lead which contained some odds and ends of the first orks, a kind of space marine and some more recognisable beakies. Really wish I hadn't given them to younger family members now, I bet they ended up in the bin.

Battle for Macragge starter set. So a Tactical Squad, some (16? seems a bit high, but w/e) Termagaunts and 8 (again, ?) Genestealers. Oh, and a couple of spore mines.
But, if I remeber correctly, I rather quickly traded the Nids for a... I believe it was a assault squad. So one could argue that these are my first models, too.

The first Warhammer models I bought from a carboot sale: it was a Rose's tin filled with two squads of Fantasy orks, an Epic Imperator titan, an Epic Mega Gargant and an Eldar Falcon. However the first 40k models I got that I've actually played with were 3 metal Rubric marines.

Ultramarine Librarian with Freaky Familiar
|
Mine was a Space Marine Commander, from the multipart plastic kit. Stormbolter and chainsword, although I later replaced the chainsword with a power sword. Soon bolstered by the Assault on Black Reach kit and single Bike.
I don't believe I repainted him when I went through my Ultramarines and repainted the whole lot. He's one of the few left of my original "paintings" - the other most notable is a lone plasma cannon devastator I gave my girlfriend when she started playing - she keeps it in it's original poorly painted state, because she can't bear to strip it.
