Hi everyone!

So my friends and I have recently started collecting 40K again, and a few things about the system for building armies in 8th edition are... Less than clear to us. For context, we are trying to make our armies Battleforged so as to be able to bring them to tourneys as well as friendly matches.

In my case, I am re-vamping and updating my Emperor's Children army from 11-12 years ago to work with the current edition, adding new and shiny things where I can, but army composition and what units from Daemons I can use and how is wrecking my head somewhat. My understanding so far is that as long as units share a faction keyword, they can be fielded as an army together, correct? Would I also be correct in assuming this means you can field Eldar and Dark Eldar together, as they both have the Aeldari keyword? Cause that would be an odd combo.

Even more importantly, my EC army relies on being able to take Noise Marines as a Troop Choice, which is apparently possible so long as they carry the Emperor's Children keyword according to this FAQ:

https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/PDF/Errata/Warhammer_40000/40K_8th_ed_Update_Codex_Chaos_Space_Marines_ver_1.0.pdf

Does this apply just to the Noise Marines themselves? Does the whole Detachment need the Keyword for this to work? The whole army?

My plan so far is to have an army composed of two Battalion detachments, one of Daemons and one of EC, would this mean that I could still count Noise Marines as Troops for the EC detachment?

Your understanding is correct.
Noise marines are troops if they have the Emperor's Children legion. Only they need it, but it's better if thier entire detachment has it, as then you unlock legion bonuses.
Splitting your detachments into daemon faction and legion faction is a good idea.

For match play and traits purposes, the Faction Keywords are what you want to look at.

Ignore to bottom Keyword line and instead use the Faction Keyword line to determine if they can group together. Match play only states that all of your detachments need a common Faction Keyword with each other (IMPERIUM, CHAOS,AELDARI,TAU,NECROS,ORKS ect.)

For traits and such, the detachment in question has to not only follow the requirements in the codex (as defined in codex) but must also fulfill the requirement of being a mono part of the faction (Same god for all Daemons, Same legion, Same Chapter. ect)

So long as you remember these, you should have no problems with building an army in the new 40k
