Hey everyone, just getting back into the warhammer hobby and trying to paint some quality models this time around. These are some crypt ghouls I have painted so far. I need some advice on how to highlight and tidy up these guys. I tried highlights with the base coat, and slightly lighter colors and disliked it. Any ideas or constructive criticism?

Was going for a pale gray/blue skin tone. Used Celestra gray as a base coat. I tried some dry brushing here with Ulthan gray and some highlighting on bones.

I think they look pretty good. You'll get neater results using your first method of layering up from the basecoat to a lighter colour. Are you using washes?

Looking pretty gritty already! If you want to go the longer way I would recommend doing 2-3 smooth line highlights along their raised parts (water down the paint quite a tad for smoother transitions) and maybe then give them glowing eyes in red or ice blue for some contrast.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes I am using the nuln oil wash directly after basecoating mostly everything except for teeth and eyes and nails. I found this to be pretty quick, but it’s leaving out details and I’m working on adding them in. Should I be washing a second time after dry brush or highlight? Also I will try some line highlights again, maybe last time I went too far with it. Just seems like I maybe highlighting with too bright of a color and the contrast off of the base coat and dark wash kind of looks funny

So I tried some pallid wych flesh line highlights and I think it turned out decently with the base coat and dry brush. The models might be a little darker than I had originally planned, Any other tips?

Nice one, look like they are out on a cloudy night! Maybe try colouring the rim in a pale bone-like colour and add a little static grass/flock to the bases to provide contrast to the greyscale of the Ghouls!

You could make them pop a little more from the dark skin by making the hair a bit brighter.

like a little more into the red browns.

Do you mean to highlight the bone colors just on the bones? I plan on doing Brown with a dry brush and some mordheim tufts for the bases.

I like the idea of brighter hair, think I could leave the base and do some very thin highlights of something redder/brighter? If so do you have any citadel colors you’d recommend? I’m using Gorthor Brown as a base
