There are lots of special rules that allow you to perform an Advance without penalty- such as the new Tau warlord trait from chapter approved that allows you to perform an advance move and fire as if you hadn't moved. One thing I'm having difficulty understanding though, is: does this mean I can go a full move plus D6 for free, or just the D6?

1) As a friendly heads up, rules questions go in in YMDC.

2) Page 177 of the BRB,
Advancing
When you pick a unit to move in the Movement phase, you can declare that it will Advance. Roll a dice and add the result to the Move characteristics of all models in the unit for that Movement phase. A unit that Advances can’t shoot or charge later that turn.
You roll a D6 and add it to your move Characteristic for that turn.

You can do the following:

Remain stationary: May fire any weapons without penalty.

Move (your normal Move value): May fire any weapons, but Heavy Weapons suffer -1 penalty.

Advance (your normal Move value + D6"): You may only fire Assault Weapons and they suffer a -1 penalty to hit.

Advance does not actually let you move anywhere. Making an advance is rolling a d6 and adding the result to your move characteristic for the remainder of the turn.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

You dont have to move your entire movement value, even when advancing. But you still get -1 to hit assault weapons, because you advanced, even when standing still.
