Does a charging unit have to measure their distance around other friendly unit or do you get to move through other units for the purposes of measuring a charge distance?

My last game, my opponent had several characters in a line. The first failed the charge. The second character was directly behind the one who failed the charge. I argued that he'd have to include the movement around the first character and he said that it's assumed that they move out of the way.

You cannot move through other models, unless you have FLY that lets you.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"

From 'Moving', page 177:

It cannot be moved through other models or through terrain features such as walls, but can be moved vertically in order to climb or traverse any scenery.

I see no exception to this rule for friendly models.

You can't move though models (unless you can Fly). You can, however, move BETWEEN models of a friendly unit, if you can fit through (unit coherency can be up to 2", so most infantry can pass through if your screening unit has been spaced wide enough)
