Hello,
I have the Codex Chaos Space Marines 8th Ed. I have just bought the Chaos Space marines and cultists from the Dark Vengeance box set (bought from Ebay on their own).
I notice that the Lord, leader of the chosen, and the hellbrute might be named characters if they're taken as Crimson Slaughter (I know I don't have to take them as Crimson Slaughter).
I also notice that the Crimson Slaughter rules are not in the Chaos Space Marines Codex. Are they anywhere else? In Index Chaos maybe?

The Crimson Slaughter faction was a sub-codex that got dropped from 7th to 8th.
The Helbrute, Chosen Sarge and Lord were never SC's proper, but you could make your own Lord using the Artifacts, along with one for the Chosen.

Ah cheers. I wanted to know if I could make them into a Crimson Slaughter detachment and give them special Crimson Slaughter rules, but being as they'll just be treated as Renegades, I'll paint them in my own warbands colours instead.
I had planned on painting the Hellbrute and Chosen as my warband, but keep the Special Characters as Crimson Slaughter. The Lord can easily be just as another lord, but I'm not quite sure I know what to use the other guy for. He's the one with the Power Mace. Dark Acolyte maybe?

The codex has rules of "renegades", the CS fall under that category.
None of the characters in DV has any actual rules beyond the generic models of their type these days though. so basically just a regular model of their type with the proper equipment.
the lord fits as a sorcerer too though based on appearance alone.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now. |

Awesome. I might just paint them all in my warband... I did want to keep any Special Characters as their original paint scheme, but being as they're no longer special (or as special as I want to make them) I'd rather include them in my Blue and Silver paint scheme (Invocators, Adharon's Reavers, Violators, Alpha Legion... whatevers).
I have a renegade space marines as my main army and am happy to have detachments of other warbands as the rules require to have their units, like Death Guard. I also wanted to get Kharne the Betrayer, so I'll get a small Bezerker squad to back him up as a patrol detachment, as an example and paint them as World Eaters (plus they'll look nice on my shelf).

There is indeed an update for Dark Vengeance to use the 8th Edition rules. They also shipped a voucher for the new rulebook with Dark Vengeance when 8th edition was announced... I guess to shift the last few sets. From what I hear (anecdotally) the Crimson Slaughter didn't gain much traction with hobbyists and weren't very popular, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just kept them rolled up into renegades and didn't mention them again.

The main thing was this weird, sudden interest in this new warband. It had an interesting gimmick to itself even if the lore couldn't figure out where it wanted to go, but it was during this period of time they were trying to tout Chaos as primarily warbands and ignoring other already canon Renegade factions to keep pushing these newcomers.

You could play them with Night Lords Legion traits. Automatically Appended Next Post: Would have been cool if they had a Strategem for the poltergeist spirits.... Their special missions were pretty cool.

As far as I know, almost all of the Crimson Slaughter were wiped out on Amenthal as part of some plan cooked up by abb's to jump start the gathering of storms and the maledictium. The chapter warlord and a few HQ's survived with perhaps a few vessels but I think as a cohesive warband they are done. Used up by the Black Legion. Sucks to be a renegade and not from a legion proper. Chaos politics are brutal.
