I'm planning on starting a Custodes army but I don't want to do them in a traditional bright gold, instead I want to go for something closer to bronze/copper. I'm planning on painting the Balthasar Gold -> Agrax Earthshade? -> Gehenna's Gold -> Golden Griffon.

The thing is, I'm not 100% sure what color primer would be the best to use. I have a gunmetal colored primer from Army Painter and I'm wondering if that's a fine color to do the undercoat with? Any thoughts if that would work or if there's a better color to get the effect I'm looking for?

I would do Black followed by a spray of Rhinox Hide.

Putting brown down before Balthasar Gold lets you get some interesting tones for the color.

I'd also do different colors if you're wanting Brass/Copper.

Start with:
Warplock Bronze->Agrax Earthshade->Runelord/Skullcrusher/Brass Scorpion

The later one would depend on how bright you want it to be. Skullcrusher is the brightest, Brass Scorpion is kind of dull, and Runelord is in the middle.

I was actually looking to do something relatively close to this:

And they use a similar recipe to what I described earlier with Balthasar Gold and Gehenna's Gold but I'll definitely consider it. Looking at the Citadel paint app maybe what I'm trying to do is closer to their bronze instead but without the Auric Armor Gold.

Looks like they used the old tin-bitz. I think Warplock Bronze is the equivalent now. I know P3 just put out an equivalent as well, but I don't remember the name.

I'd actually undercoat in bubonic brown equivalent, then with your midtone gold to get a bright basecoat before knocking it back down. I've found the golds don't cover very well... so building up tends to make the highlights streaky.

Warplock Bronze is the equivalent. There isn't really a "bubonic brown" equivalent at this point.

You'd be surprised at how well these metallics get coverage, provided you don't water them down to hell and back again.

Black or Brown is nice for a gold base

Would I have any problems painting gold over a gunmetal grey colored primer? I can see it being helpful on the jetbikes since they have plenty of gunmetal parts but if black is better or if it's generally a bad idea to paint over gunmetal grey with gold (or in this case a darker gold in Balthasar Gold) I might consider that instead.

Here's a tutorial from Warhammer TV for the bronze armour found on the Sisters of Silence.

for a darker gold here on some High Elves I went with a 50-50 mix of Burnt Umber and Glorious Gold (VMA for spraying) over a black primer.

gives a deep and dull gold colour that can be highlighted directly gold

Holy cow, I LOVE this! Where did you find the mini, and what's their recipe?

I found it on here and they use a recipe similar to what I described earlier (Balthasar Gold -> Agrax Earthshade -> Gehenna's Gold -> Runefang Steel, plus a bit of Reikland Fleshshade + Druchii Violet mixed in), I'm hoping to get a look close to that with that recipe with my Custodes.

I've had good results painting gold over VMC Orange-Brown, it's got a warm tone to it and goes on nicely, and the gold picks up off that.

Zamersi Desert is an effective equivalent.
