Ive been toying around with some ideas on how to use Cypher. I can't decide if running him under Chaos (Alpha Legion Chosen to represent Fallen and can infiltrate) or Imperium and run some Dark Angels units as a "Fallen" force. I'm aiming for a more fluffy build but would still be able to do okay in average games. The reason I'm not going with the Fallen unit is because I think there isn't enough support (i.e. transports and stratagems) that really buff them enough to be taken and I could get the "Fallen" feel better off a different force that would do better as a whole. Any ideas?

I ran into a similar dilemma and solved it by painting all my Dark Angels in First Legion (Fallen) colors. Now I do both. Let's me plug and play my force with my other imperial and chaos armies interchangeably.

Incidentally, I now have a much larger range of wargear options available when I run them as squads of fallen.

I intend to have him and bodyguard of fallen leading a mixed Darkangels/Iron Hands primaris army.

I call it the 'Codex Non-Compliant' and its glorious.

On table, Cypher's an odd nut. He helps out the fallen, which like the Legion of the Damned are just a single elite choice. Fallen are decent melee options and so is Cypher, but you can get other models just as good for a lot less pain. Strangely, his Imperium keyword and lack of Chapter<> keyword makes him a great fit for inquisitors, who suffer the same issue in non-inquestor detachments.

For the Chaos side I think he's interesting, but why not run Khrone stuff instead and avoid the risk of being dropped against by a DeathWing player?

I'm painting my Dark Vengeance Dark Angels as Fallen and built 10 more fallen to accompany Cypher alongside my Word Bearers. They bring some very welcome plasma dakka, albeit footslogging. They have worked wonders as screens. For Chaos, and I'm not sure their impact on Imperium chapter detachments, they don't disrupt our Legion and I can put one squad in or have 3 squads with cypher and one whatever of Word Bearers and it's a coherent Word Bearers vanguard detachment.

I'm also painting my Dark Vengeance terminators and librarian as Fallen colors and I'll run them as renegade chapters that brings me to about 900 points of "fallen" that I'll be able to use as whatever successor chapter if I run them as imperium for whatever reason.

Cypher has added a lot of fun to my games even if he's not with other Fallen. He's surprisingly been hard for my opponents to kill and being able to fall back and pop off 5 shots is nothing to balk at.

Or maybe it is. I'm a new player. But they've been really fun so far.

I have a small 'Ravenwing' force that I am in the process of building, for the Infantry side of things I was thinking of doing some kind of 'ode to Cypher' on the infantry srg's. Squads of 5 men, 1 with Plasma Gun, Srg with dual pistols, one Plasma one Bolt. Or give the srg 2 plasma pistols.

Cypher is still one of those characters in the fluff that capture my interest in a way that others just never have. Sometimes he acts more like an Eldar with the way he manipulates people and situations to either the favor or bane of the Imperium, he is one great character. I am sure there is a way to make Cypher and his group as semi-competitive.

Also any thoughts of mixing Fallen and Legion of the Damned together?

So I was at a 'Ding and Dent' sale this weekend at a FLGS and picked up a unit of fallen to go with my Cypher and this got me thinking along the same lines. Any detachment you throw Cypher and his fallen brethren in is only going to be Imperium - but - they aren't the only models that are ok with that:

1) Inquisitors. The ORDO keyword is model specific, so is unaffected by runing with Cypher. This means you can back him up with an excellent well-armed psyker and plenty of acolytes as chaff. You could even get a Jakero and suffer no penalties.
2) Legion of the Damned - Fancy a little deepstrike/invul saves to your formation? Plus it doubles down on the whole 'wheels within wheels' fluff
3) Miliatrum Auxillria - This is all the Abhuman and support models of the Astra Militarum that never benefit from a regiment keyword anyway.
4) Celestine/Gulliman. It's obligatory to point out these two models buff Imperium keyword and work out scarily well, even if it means a pretty hefty point cost

This is a fantastic point that I'm surprised isn't a thread of its own.

Cypher, Celestine, Fallen, and Legion of the Damned teamed up with an Inquisition force? I don't know if Celestine fits correctly, but an "Evil Celestine" or "Shadow Celestine" could be interesting......

I'm... picturing a Celestine with a goatee now.

I don't know how I'd build an army for it, let alone if it could even hold its own, but I absolutely love this idea. I'm going to do some inept tinkering.
