Subject: Should I wait an edition before selling my models?

Monstrously Massive Big Mutant

I've been playing since spring of last year, and im curious about advice on a conundrum I find myself in. I own (between Daemons and CSM) 9k of Chaos. I never have played beyond 3000 points, but obviously I don't play the same 3k every time. The issue is, even though I might be playing 8000 points of the 9000, I still have 1000 points of models that I /never/ use. I've used my Maulerfiend once, i've used my Chaos Space Marines (chaos tac marines) once, and my Chaos Paladin Knight once. I've been considering pawning them off to other people (very specifically the marines) because they're just taking up shelf space...But should I wait? Before the Daemon codex, I thought skull cannons were dirt useless, and they WERE...But post-codex, these things are fantastic now.
Should I wait for FAQs and the like to fix the playability of these units, or even 9th edition to see what happens? For all we know, 9th edition will make Tac marines good, and cultists along with other chaff units not auto-takes.
Would love any input!

If you like the models then hold onto them. Maulerfiends are great. I don't mind tac marines, but I hate the CSM models. Knights will likely see a tweak in the future.

Having a variety of units to pick from certainly makes it easier to update lists between Codexes and editions. The meta shifts very fast with things like Chapter Approved and quarterly balance FAQs, so things that may be useless now could be the mainstay of your army in March.
If shelf space is an issue, just put them in a box in the closet until they're needed.

We all know the meta changes.
I have Maulerfiends / Forgefiends that I've never used in a game. They look cool standing next to Land Raiders. I don't particularly care if they will ever be useful again, having a large horde I can lay out from time to time and look at is satisfying.
If looking at painted models is not satisfying, I suggest the OP does sell the models. Sure, they could have a use at some point in the future, but it's more important to have something you are satisfied with. Use the money towards the purchase of some cool FW thing. Start a second army, currently working on Eldar / Inquisition myself. Buy an airbrush and perfect your technique.
But be happy with what you have. This hobby costs money and time and you should enjoy the hell out of it. The fact you are wondering means it's time.

I would never recommend buying or selling models based on the current meta unless you're a tournament player. Game balance changes, sometimes rapidly. What's weak now could be one of your strongest choices after the next round of FAQs. If you don't like the models or need the extra space, sell away, but if you just don't feel like it fits in the current meta, I'd wouldn't bother selling.

By that same token some stuff will never be good in 8th edition by virtue of the way it is defined. One look at Custodes should tell you its time to sell your Grey Knights, for example. 9th edition might be years away.

The way I see it is, it's more variety. You might get bored of playing the same "staple" models and you want to change the things up a bit. The only time I've sold models was when 5th came out and Chaos got ripped in half. I sold off my daemons since I couldn't use them in my army anymore and I didn't have enough to make a Daemon list.

Nope. Sell all your models. To me. For dirt cheap!
Jokes aside, you should hang onto them if you can afford the space. You might want to come back in another edition and having some toys already helps lower the cost.

I would echo this. Back in 6th I sold off 40 Beserkers... and we all know how they turned out in 8th

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.
To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

I don't share that outlook, but we'll see if they have any creativity around GK soon enough.

at this point GKs basicly need a codex rewrite. or some sort of supplement/massive errata inn chapter approved that the end result is lamost the same

Well codexes should be done around summer so then we can start to wait for codex rewrites.

If you plan to stay in the game long term I recommend not selling models. You will regret doing so almost every time. Things get better then worse again and if you sell stuff you never get back what you paid for it. So unless you need the money (or the space) selling off models is inadvisable.

What would you do with the cash you would get for selling them? Would you buy more Chaos things, or start a new army? If it's something like that or you need the cash... go ahead and sell the ones...
Otherwise pop them in the box carefully and store them in the loft... you will find them again in like 10 years and find people selling them on ebay as OOP, Vintage, Retro, RARE etc and sell them for stupid money.
