Hello,
I am trying to make a list for my friend, in order to corrupt him into buying some models and playing with me. Right now he is set on trying Craftworld Eldar but the things he want are... difficult to say at least.

He decided to make his list around the idea of Alaitoc rangers. I was happy to oblige in getting him a three units of 7 Rangers as they are pretty decent on paper as core, then he wanted some anti tank in form of Hornets which he really liked so I added some with Crimson Hunter Exarch cause he wanted a jet. Seems a bit straightforward doesn't it?

Well his HQ is... strange. He decided that he doesn't want any psychic which limits his options and he doesn't like the idea of mixing codex Autarch with Index ones. He decided to have 7 Autarchs with Star Glaives (2 in Battalion, 5 in Supreme Command) and cram these poor things into a wave serpent. He thinks of them as of "War Council" akin to Warlock Council to accompany his General.
Now this is where my brain turned off and started to melt out of my ears. Is his idea insane and I should "nudge" him into taking a more open-minded approach? I'd hate to kill off his creativity, and now that I thinks of it it should be ok if somewhat weird. It's still a 7, 3+ 4++ dudes with strange looking power fists, even if he needs to make 7 charge rolls.

What do you think?

Let him proxy them with some other minis for a few games and see how they work. I don't think its a great idea but who knows? Maybe he will uncover a hidden gem.

Let him do what he wants, encourage him. It'd be a shame to stifle his creativity. This allows you to play the same way. Just have a talk with him where you try to find out what it is what he likes in/wants to get from the hobby. Maybe he likes the narrative games and couldn't care less about optimized lists.

I get you, I'd call myself a pretty casual player and my brain too started to turn liquid while reading this. But the meta/net will probably slowly grind his innocence into dust anyway, and like the rest of us he'll probably end up running more streamlined lists. Enjoy this while it lasts :p
