I was looking at GW's terrain paints and I wanted to use the cracked earth effect on my Necron models. Unfortunately they are already based and I am trying to figure out if there is a way to change the bases. Right now they're a snow and gravel style. Sand sealed down by wood (edit: white) glue, inked and then spray painted. I was thinking of a brute force approach with a chisle but I worry the base might break before the sand does...

Any thoughts?

If they weren't Necrons I'd say just clip away the old bases and start over, but Necrons look spindly and weak...particularly the finecrap ones.

I have found I can use my chisel Xactor blade to slicer under "most" basing materials if I need to - they tend to lift off in a sheet, moreso if you leave the miniature in water for a bit.

It also depends if you glued the models to the plastic or the sand. If its to the plastic then i would use a knife or use a razor saw to cut the feet away, or worst case would be to buy new bases and use clippers to clip the old bases around the feet then trim the base of the bottom of the foot. If there glued to the sand then the above way is definatly your best bet

Actually if it was normal white glue you may be able to get away with dunking the base in water for a few days and it should gel up to the point you can scrap it off.

Wood glue. boat glue. super glue... you may be boned.

also be careful not to let it slop onto the miniature. so just foot wet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll set up a tray and give my Necrons a nice foot bath.

Maybe get some hot stones or a massage later.
