I'm looking to run My Orks in the new edition, I know they are supposedly not competitive. What is the general consensus, hordes or lots of trucks?

Right now Green Tide is the way to go. Orks currently have one of the best troops in the game point for point in the form of Boyz, so bringing lots of Boyz is currently the most competitive way to WAAAAAAGH! Also, if you go Green Tide you will probably want a Weirdboy, as his Da Jump power can help move your Boyz across the board without needing vehicles.

Yeah it's hordes or auto lose, bikes are terrible and so are dreads and forget trakks and buggies.
It's a sad state of affairs really.

The best way I've heard to use battlewagons is to take a deff rolla without any ranged weapons, use it as a transport.
If you want to be competitive though, don't bother with battlewagons.

Orks greentides (hordes style with boyz, kommandos, stormboyz and characters) are competitive, they can even win tournaments.
In casual metas or semi-competitive ones also mechanized lists can do well. Just don't mix the different styles unless you have tons of experience.
My favorite list has BWs, trukks, buggies, artillery, charcaters plus units embarked. Sometimes a morkanaut instead of a couple of vehicle to act as a bullet magnet, letting bustas and boyz embarked to advance safely.
The most competitive lists are all based around 150+ cheap bodies though.

Ork Boyz, storm boyz, kommandos, lootas, and artillery (kannon and mek gun) are all solid choices. All other ork shooting and their vehicles in general have been screwed by all the -1 to hit and their absurd point costs. If you like playing games with tons of bodies and charging at the enemy, they will still perform quite well.

My younger brother ran a list that consisted of a lot of boyz, backed up by grot guns, a battlewagon, and a few characters [including Ghazskull] for buffs when I was back home, and he was doing pretty well.
That was also when there were only a few Codecies out, so I don't know if it's lasted and if it's still what he's running. Most Orks I see are running lots of boyz, and doing pretty okay, all things considered.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Orks actually are not nearly as bad as the community on dakka suggests. Boyz might be the best troops in the game. Their shooting is weak, but is that really anything new? Your biggest problem with Orks is that Imperial Guard and Eldar have massive hardcounters to you, and they're the most common armies. The best answer right now with Orks is lots of Boyz and Stormboyz.

I've played orks more than a dozen times with my sw I came close to losing only once every other hand was a walk in the park.
And sw are in a pretty sorry state, so going against armies with codex rules is even worse.

Boyz might be the best troop but only if you wanna run hordes of boyz on foot to take advantage of the buffs.
For me they are near useless as I run mech. 12 boyz? Useless. 20 boyz? mostly useless and comes with a huge tax in the form of a battlewagon.

This might have been true at the beginning of 8th edition, but it's not anymore. Bloodletters, Horrors, Tzaangors, Imperial Guards and many other make Ork Boyz look like wimps. GW needs to return our KFF to its previous state, giving a 5++ to any unit with at least 1 model in range (or simply to double its range). Without it we're just too vulnerable.
Btw, someone said Lootas were a competitive choice : I strongly disagree. 17pts models with no save and only 1 wound, no mobility and crap Leadership ? For 17pts Thousand Sons have a unit with 2 wounds, 5++, awesome mobility and the same firepower than a Loota...

This! Some people don't understand that an Ork army isn't just boyz.... plus to get those 100-200 boyz you're looking at about £150-£300 just for 1k points of troops. At leasg with other factions you can buy expensive but high points vechiles that are worth taking.

That's not much better if army depends on gimmick item. Might just as well put them as mandatory choices regardless of does player want to use them or not.

If you want to win with orks, you need a horde with as few units as possible because going first is 30% of the win. Also, keep the command point to re-roll the other most important thing in the game. 2d6 for the charge. That's another 50% of the win. The rest is about movement and keeping in range of auras. But it's not much more different from any other army in the game atm other than you also have to move to get things done.

Oh, I think you have it wrong. Pretty much all ork player on dakka agree that the build around lots of boyz, characters and artillery are doing well in tournaments. Not winning them, but constantly appearing in top 8 of all sorts of events.
Almost all orks also agree that playing this way is both boring as hell, takes a lot of time and money to build and paint. On top of that all other ways to build ork armies are pretty much dead in the water right now, just like every non-ultramarine army is for space marines.
So yes, orks aren't weak. If you are not aiming to win/place well in tournaments you should stay the hell away from them, because you are going to be playing a lot of repetitive and boring games until the codex drops. Unless you drop a ton of cash into other things from the model range, so your opponent can easily table you by turn 2.
Seriously, when playing my Death Guard (pure DG, no pox walker horde or Mortarion... yet) I feel like I have no clue what I'm doing and yet still keep winning games. With my orks, I have 10+ years of experience, I build my lists as hard as possible and barely manage to snag away a win sometimes. That's how "well" orks work right now.
|
7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

For some people "doing well" means appearing in the top 10 at the events and tournaments data are the bible
IMHO several units that are not considered competitive, like the transports, meganobz, planes, bikes, lootas or kans, can actually do ok in regular metas that are not toxic ones, and for toxic I mean those ones with only competitive players. But half codex is really hard to play, if not impossible, even in casual metas.
They also do ok against index armies, and index armies still exist. I play 4 different factions and I haven't seen a codex yet

Mekboy on Kustom Deth Kopta
|
Ork Boyz aren't the best troops in the game by a long shot.
They are good though and when backed by buffing characters such as Warbosses, Weirdboyz and to a lesser degree KFF Big Mek or Painboy they can perform well.
Kustom Mega Kannon Mek gunz are very good/points efficient.
Staying outside of Forge World the only viable vehicle is the Trukk and it's use is to transport Tank Bustas or to be a shield for Lootas, forget putting Boyz in there. Battlewagon is too expensive for what it does and the units it can transport.
Deff Dreads and Kans are laughably bad and objectively worse than their counterparts in other armies.
Meganobz don't hit hard enough and a lack of invulnerable save hurts them.
Nobz I like but you'll need some protection such as a transport or KFF for them. Ammo Runts are mandatory.
Flash Gitz do some serious damage but a 6+ save is not only bizarre but feels like trolling on GWs part.
Bikes of any flavour are awful.
Buggies and Trakks are points efficient.
Mork/Gorkanauts seem to do well, I don't have one myself (yet) so can't comment too much. They hit hard in CQC but their shooting is dire.
I think all of our planes, apart from the Wazbomm Blasta Jet are OK, Dakkajet and Burna Bomma are best of the 4.
If you want to win with Orks you bring the tide. Choose a flavour of Boy (Boyz, Stormboyz, Kommandos) and spam them. Generally Boyz do best in this configuration followed by Stormboyz with Kommandos the least effective in terms of damage but most tricksy.
If you want to have a somewhat competitive game bring the tide and mix in some optional units for fun.
If you just play for fun bring whatever you like.
Just remember the age old mantra - Boyz before toyz.

Flash gitz are twice as bad at killing tactical marines than tactical marines are at killing flash gitz. I fail to see this as 'some serious damage'.
They do pay off in 3 turns when shooting tactical marines and recieving no fire in return for some reason. But 27 ppm for a nob with heavy weapon and 6+ armor is nuts. And that's with most units we have. First you look at them and think - oh, cool, i guess they do ok but they're fragile so i need to put them in a trukk or something. Maybe even a wagon! Oh, walkers are slow and don't do much but i can take a lot of them! And than you go to the price page and quickly find out that everything is too expensive to compete with a greentide.

I have always hated the idea of playing Horde Orkz, preferring trukk rushes and Lootaz instead...
This edition strongly favors footslogging mobz so needless to say I haven't played them much. I do very much like what the Mob Rule does, but I've only massed 6x 12 boyz to fit in 6 trukks.
Im hoping a proper Codex (with some Evil Suns rules) will give us a reason to bring Trukks again.

I've played them several times, and in my epxerience it's unlikely they manage to reach combat. That's the reason why I prefer the morkanaut: it's cheaper and gives the 5+ invuln aura to the closest units letting you save the points of a big mek with KFF. In fact the nauts basically work as bullet magnets now, allowing multiwounds units like trukks, wagons, planes, buggies and artillery to survive for 1-2 more rounds. The morkanaut also shoots a bit better so I'd definitely rank it above the melee counterpart. They're both meh units but in a mechanized list the morkanaut may be ok for casual or semi-competitive games.

Well they surely want to sell their models and with the current rules orks won't sell much since boyz are usually bought in significant lots on second hand markets.

They are killy but also incredibly fragile. If they had a save to speak of (like they should) your comparison would be skewed much more in the Flash Gits favour. As you say throw them in a trukk or battle wagon with ammo runts. I assume you could Ed ammo runts in your comparison of marine vs flash gits?

I'm the opposite, I love playing footslogging hordes and used to grumble about Speed Freaks being to good!
Hopefully, the new Codex with allow both of us to play to their preferred style with some success :-)
Most of the Ork units are almost there imo, they just need some minor tweaks not a major revamp like people say the Necrons do.

I think people need to realise that the majority of us play games outside of the tournament scene. We like to play DnD games or campaign games or even short fun games...
Imagine if you had a game of DnD and all the Dungeon master kept throwing at you was Hob Goblins... Like actual hundreds of them and throughout the weeks of campaigns you never see a single other creature but a Hob Goblin, you don't even meat any other NPCs. The battle is tough but you always win slaughtering as many as you can/ However, one time he gives you something new! It's a level 1 rat with 1 hp... You auto win so the DM goes back to Hob Goblins....
You would get so bored you'd probably ban the dude from ever being a dungeon master again! And yet, this is how I feel 40k is right now. I nearly had a heart attack with enjoyment when i saw Orks vs Dark Eldar the other day on youtube... just because it was something different! You should be able to bring what ever army you want and at least stand a chance of winning that you make the game fun (that way efficient lists have more chance of winning but not an auto turn 1 win, and people who want to just have fun can have fun).
