I am wanting to put together a small 1000-1200 pt Alpha Legion army for narrative play and it dawned on me that I do not know what Mk of power armor they use. I do not want to use the Chaos Space Marines , I feel they don't fit the fluff of these guys. Gigantic, spiny horns and faces chained to your plate doesn't exactly say "subtle"...I was thinking of using a large bodies of cultists and such as the bulk ( they are the ones that joined an Alpha cult or something) a few small units of Astartes for the actual legion and maybe a couple dreadnoughts.
I have a 5k point Space Wolf army, and a 2k point Death Guard army as well and wanted a new palete to play with. Any advice is welcome.

Type in Alpha Legion into a google search image.

First image has skulls, spikes and generally is not at all subtle.
Fourth and fifth image are even more extreme, one having a VERY not-stealthy Heavy Bolter.

Alpha Legion aren't so much black ops as they are just masters of plots. Think Hydra from Marvel, infact. They use plots but still send obvious Alpha Legion goons in.

In a squad, have mostly mk4 but a few pieces of mk6. This is to represent how the alpha legion treasured mk6 as it was by far the best for stealth.

Use Primaris with FW transfers and/or shoulder pads and you are good to go.

That is how I would do the 'sneaky' legion.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Either the fluff for AL is a mess or the understand of said fluff is way off for a lot of players. AL are not black ops or ninjas. They are one of the most strategic legions as in they plan meticulously for raids. They mostly use cultists to infiltrate imperial positions of power or importance (IE posing as workers at the planetary relay stations). Once the dirty work is done the legion proper comes in to finish the job (not always). As for the legionaries they do have spikes but tend to be less mutated than their brethren by not being in the eye of terror for prolonged periods or heavy worship of the chaos gods (god). That said they still field plenty of chaos tech such as demon engines and have no qualms about summoning demons to cause havoc. The legion even has at least one recorded demon prince (probably many more). This is all taken from the CSM codex 8th edition.

That being said, nothing is preventing you from using your own head canon when making your army. Perhaps they are a splinter cell of the AL whom find chaos taint abhorrent and lean heavily on using heresy era tech.

In the end it isnt that AL marines are sneaky in a stealthy fashion as they are sneaky in a deployment and ambush fashion. No mark of power armor is stealthy as a 8 foot post human monstrosity tends to stick out with power armor on or off.

I think primaris marines would be off a bit to much in scale to the rest of the chaos army. But thats me. You do you.

Ok. I am on The last book of the Horus Heresy, having finished Praetorians of Dorn recently, and really liked the imagery I got on my head when I heard about them. The part of the book when they are coming up out of the depths of the mine behind a horde of cultists was awesome. I realize this is 30k, but I guess I was thinking they were more toward infiltration than straight fights,( although they can hold their own being; Astartes and all...) as well as coercion and assassination...I haven't bought the new CSM codex. Is it worth it ? The pattern of power armor that you get when you buy a box of loyalist Marines (non-Primaris) is what MK?

If I was to use the Marines from the Betrayal at Calth would they be too outdated for 40k?

Well first off you can use any mark of armor you like. Like I said most AL by the current time frame look nothing like they did in the heresy but you can easily make your warband a splinter of the legion that eschews demonic corruption and summons.
And yes they do infiltrate but it is more in the deployment sense as apposed to the ninja thing some people imagine. AL is heavily invested in cultists to do what the marines cannot. But that does not mean the AL cannot brawl with the best of them. Infact the current fluff is keen to point out their martial prowess and how they like to test themselves vs the strongest foes they can find.

You should buy the CSM codex or have it on hand in some fashion if you plan to play AL in 40k. The AL is by far the strongest overall legion in the codex by a country mile. Their legion trait gives them a -1 to by hit at ranges greater than 12 inchs and they have dirt cheap stratagem which allows you to infiltrate infantry units. Many players will infiltrate blobs of bezerkers for a alpha strike but you can also make use of the other cult units in that capacity. Remember that hel brutes and Oblits also have access to the legion trait making them even tougher to kill at range. Of course you have a hard counter in assault armies but even then you really only have to worry about BA's and maybe Tyranids,.

That was a really good answer. For some reason when I think of a sneaky legion I imagine RG more. Thanks everyone for all the inspiration!

Question: any thoughts about also starting a 30k army?

If so, Mk 4 may be a choice that allows you to use them in both.
