I've been in the hobby for a couple years now, but haven't really gotten serious until my friends got me a Tantalus for my Birthday. Putting that together was a struggle, but I feel like I'm 10x the hobbyist because of it. I don't have all that much experience with converting or working with greenstuff, so please be patient with me if I don't know something . I currently play Dark Eldar exclusively, however I am open to the idea of other models if other pieces are needed for bits or for conversions. I have a stable source of income so I'm willing to go all out on my hobby . I am in school for another 2-ish months though, so I'm just making plans for the future.
The problem I come to you with is two fold. I want to make some pretty heavily converted Wych Cult and Coven armies in the future. I already have plenty of Kabal stuff and I did a regular theme of Lords of the Iron Thorn for that.
Wych Cult:
Spoiler:
My Wych Cult army I am hoping to make Dune themed and I will call them the Cult of the Desert Rose. Wyches will be standard on foot, black void suits/desert gear and piercing blue eyes. My Reavers I hope to have riding Worms and maybe small dragons or some other desert-esque creature for my Hellions. Here is what I currently have in mind for the Reavers to ride on:
The wyrm is I believe from DnD, the Kharibdyss I was looking at because the sprues have each neck/head separate, so I could possibly use them as mounts as well, popping out of the ground similar to the wyrm's base. An Arena champion could get the bigger, scarier head. Plus, the beastmasters have whips, which I can use as connections between a rider and their mount.
Hellions: I have no idea with, so any suggestions are well appreciated.
Raiders/Ravagers/Tantalus: I was thinking of this Dreadmaw from Forgeworld:
Which I'd paint and put wyches/kabalites hanging off the sides of to show that it is indeed transporting troops. Maybe even put a succubus on the head or something.
So now that you have a decent scope of my plan, is something like this possible? Is recasting something like the whips/chains ok or is that super illegal? Would an army like that be accepted at a GW sponsored event, even if I don't have 100% GW models?
Coven:
Spoiler:
I want my Coven to be a Gangster/Mafia theme, Might name them something like Void Sharks to signify them working as loan sharks, and when their payments aren't met, they come to collect. (Door Knocking Intensifies)
This will take a lot of conversion if I intend to make all of them the fancy jackets, hats and pants (http://www.dixon-minis.com/images/gang2.jpg). Would it be possible though?
Haemonculus: I was thinking of using one of the old-school Haemys, and painting him up like the Godfather. might have to Greenstuff a jacket, a tie and maybe a small rose as well.
Wracks: Will probably take Wych or Kabalite legs since the wrack pseudo "skirts" look difficult to convert to fancy dress pants and Kabalite shoes should be fine. Thinking of arming most of them with Brass Knuckles, otherwise Bricks, Crowbars and maybe some other rudimentary weapons would work as well. Thinking of leaving the squad leader (Acothyst?) shirtless. If I equip them with the Ossefactor/Liquifier, I'm thinking of attempting to make a Tommy Gun.
Grotesques: Thinking of using the current Grotesque model as the main squad leader, leave him shirtless, and arm him with a sledgehammer, especially since he's in the perfect post-swing follow-through pose. The other Grotesques in the squad I'm thinking of using WHFB's Maneaters/Ogres but dressing them to the 9's in Mafia clothes and fancy hats. I'm thinking Babe Ruth sized baseball bats for them.
Talos/Cronos: No ideas other than painting them up all white with a red cross and calling them "nurses"
Transportation: Seeing Wargame Exclusive's cars was actually the spark for making a "Mafia" Coven, here they are:
Yeah, after looking into the Coven Mafia I'd probably have a safer bet using some Imperium stuff instead of wracks, at which point, is it truly a coven then?
Still excited to attempt some Dune Wych Cult though. Expect to see an update in a couple weeks since I've got Spring break coming up in 2 weeks.
I like both ideas. Both at least as original as any official GW designs, and nice and unique as far as I know. They fit fluff-wise as well. Sounds like a lot of work but be nice to see it done.
For the Mafia aspect perhaps if you thought about adding some visual clues rather than a facsimile of the Mafia. For example if you added trenchcoats to some minis similar to the Incubi that were included with Vect;
This bad boy will probably be 2 of my "Grotesques" He looks perfect for what I'm looking for since I was thinking of using Ogre Models with Mafia clothing and baseball bats.
