I was at a pet store buying bird sand for bases and terrain when i saw big pieces of dog biscuits. These are very dry, and very brittle. If you break pieces away from it, it leaves sharp edges, and looks like a rock. I used a chisel to shape it, and added bullet holes. I basecoated it with mechanicus standard grey (dont bother thinning it with water), used nuln oil, reikland fleshshade and casandora yellow as shades, to give it some color. Then i used a sponge to apply dawnstone and celestra grey as highlights.

Not sold I'm afraid.
You're using some expensive paints on a very inexpensive item and not getting great results imo.
Points for trying but I think you'd get better results with bark chippings, polystyrene, plaster or real life rocks.

Yeah..... that’s interesting. Might be better off with larger chunks of shale or bark layered.

I saw with eyes then young, and this is my testament.

+1 for experimentation though

I like breaking up the corks from wine bottles (just allow them to dry thoroughly first).

You mentioned bird sand? Is that fine or coarse? Hand't thought of it ... If I need sand, I usually go prowling after dark and borrow some from a building site ...

It was a first try if it would work, or not. I have no other paints around, buying cheaper paints is no problem.

Coarse sand for parrots. I have plenty of fine sand.

Doesn't it smell, like, err, dog biscuits?

And yeah I'd be worried about what they might have put in it to make it appealing for dogs to chew on it.

That doesn't seem all that hygienic, I mean that's a foodstuff sooner or later it's going to go off

What would concern me is getting the scent of dog biscuits on my miniatures. Every time you handle the biscuits they are going to generate dust, a tiny amount of which will get on the miniatures. Eventually, a dog is going to mistake the soft plastic with something edible.

Have had minis eaten by a dog before. Once they get a taste for it, you can never trust them again.

It would probably last a longer time if you covered it with some kind of sealer first. Then apply the paint. At least the smell would be at a minimum then.

Make a slab of salt dough and smash it.
I’ve never seen it go mouldy after it’s been painted/ sealed.
