I'm building a very small Necron force for my son. I am only going to use "iconic" units such as Warriros, Scarabs, Immortals and Destroyers.
We only play 500ish points games and only use Power Levels to make it easy to swap for options.

The enemy lists my son will face are the following Patrol detachments:
-Marines will always have a Razorback and a Dreadnoughts + 5 Tactical Marines and a Bike Captain
-CSM will often have 3 Obliterators, 5 Raptors, 5 CSM and a Bike Lord
-Eldar will have 10 Gaurdians, a War Walker, 1 tank (Falcon most likely) and a Skyrunner Autarch.

We do not uses attributes, chapter tactics, legion rules, etc. And only use the reroll stratagem.

So given all that, which is the best option for 3 Destroyers?
A) 2 Regular Destroyers + 1 Heavy in the same unit = 9 Power Level - Overlord would be the HQ for this option at 7PL = 16PL
B) a unit of 2 Heavy Destroyers + Destroyer Lord as HQ = 8PL + 8PL = 16PL

With either option I will have 10 Immortals and 3 Scarabs for a total of 26PL army.
-----------------------------------------------------

I like option A because it gives a bigger Destroyer unit to maximize RP rolls. The Overlord's ability is also really good to buff the Immortals, or even the Destroyer's shooting
I like option B because it gives me 2 Heavy gauss cannons that will be needed to kill the vehicles or Obliterators of the above lists, plus a decently fast beatstick HQ similar to the other lists

In either case, I'll be magnetizing the Destroyers to be either option, but I wanted to see what you guys thought was best.

I have found mixing in a Heavy Destroyer into a unit of Destroyers is a great way to keep it alive. Make they are supported, though.

That was my thinking too. Also, 2 Destroyers can easily do the work that a single Heavy does.
So instead of only 3 models with a "better" lascannon, I'd have 3 models, one with a "better" lascannon and 2 models with a total of 4 shots at AP -3 D3 damage.

Putting all your Heavy Destroyers in a single unit is just giving your opponent a priority target to eliminate in order to cripple your anti-tank capabilities. This is doubly true given that Reanimation Protocols cannot resurrect units that are completely wiped out.

Spread your Heavies among the regular Destroyer squads and your opponent will have to chew through many more models to get to them. Since all units get split-fire in 8th, there is really very little drawback to this.

Should you find yourself facing a horde list with no multi-wound models, you can always choose to remove the Heavies first if it is beneficial to do so.

I stand between the darkness and the light. Between the candle and the star.

With the increased strength and shot the Gauss Cannon received, I think my choice became clearer that a unit of 3 Destroyers with 1 Heavy is the best option.

But otoh, Heavy Ds got a significant points AND Power lever decrease. Making it easy to swap them out in each game without having to juggle something else.
3 Heavy Ds might actually be needed in our games against Marines or Eldar. Both enemy lists take multiple vehicles, which regular Gauss cannons are ok against, but not ideal
