I play Marines and I just got back into 40k, when last week I had the pleasure of meeting a horde of obliterators on the field and being thoroughly toasted. It got me thinking that I need some more ranged firepower like that. I’ve already got one Stormraven which packs a lot of heat, but should I add another? Or maybe Mortis Contemptors? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

I saw with eyes then young, and this is my testament.

A good trick vs oblits and other deepstrike units is to spread out your units and attempt to make as few important targets vulnerable as possible via bubblewrapping with cheaper units, which might be difficult with an elite army like marines. With oblits they have a 24 inch range. Using tacs, scouts (especially units with infiltrate placed in properly spaced intervals (minimum deployment of 9 inches from any allied bases) etc... you can heavily control what and where opposing deepstrike units can attack. Assuming your opponent gets first turn he likely won't be able to hit you with anything other then the DS oblits and any long range weaponry he may have brought along (lascannons, missiles, etc...). if you are going first you have a better opportunity to bubblewrap you important stuff and retaliate in full against a fraction of his army then turn around and deal with what is left. as for weapons plasma is probably best vs monstrous infantry, especially if you have a captain nearby to reroll 1s so you can relatively safely overcharge for +1 str and +1 dmg, though with space marine bs lascannons, missiles, melta (not really recommended outside mobile units due to short range) etc can be somewhat effective depending on the rolls. Another good option is to get something into melee with them then even if you don't kill the oblits as long as the melee unit survives the oblits will not be able to shoot next turn.

Board control with Scouts is key - it's one of the best features of the codex. Regardless of what else you do, you probably want some scouts in there.

There are lots of options for Dakka -twin AC Razors, Hellblasters, anything with Girly-man if your dudes are bluem etc etc. If you like MSU I'm a big fan of small Dev squads with a cherub and a couple of HW each. Lots of options. What's your flavor of marine?

He knows that I know and you know that he actually doesn't know the rules at all.

It’s a homebrew based on some obscure fluff, but I’m running the army and building it to benefit from Ultramarine characters and buffs just for simplicity’s sake.

Looking again, the other chapter tactics look much better. I may be able to swing it the another way then.
