I'm running a range-focussed Smurf Battalion Detachment.
That's one Captain with his master-crafted bolter and a Storm Shield,
one Lieutenant with a master-crafted bolter,
3 Tac Squads of 5 men each, each one with a special weapon and a matching combo weapon on the Sergeant.
One 5 man Sternguard Squad with special issue boltguns
And, some day, two Dev squads, one with 4 Lascannons and one with 4 heavy bolters.

To go along with them, there's my Templars Vanguard Detachment.
One Captain with TH/SS, jump pack and the Eternal Shield,
5 Vanguard Vets with TH/SS and jump packs for the Captain to constantly follow around,
5 Vanguard Vets with two Lightning Claws each - and jump packs, of course
and 5 Assault Terminators with TH/SS.

Transports will be added as needed.

Now I'd like to include a Crusader Squad just for the bad*ss looks, but don't really see what possible task they could fulfill that isn't already taken care of better than they could!
If I make them a shoot bunch, they lack the possibility of falling back while shooting and the points would be better spent on another UM unit, and if I give them chainswords, they'll be a stripped-down version of the Vanguard Vets with half the mobility at best.

So how could I possibly use them?

Better to make them primarily shooty, their melee is pitiful.

Combiplasma, plasma and Grav-cannon in a Razorback is a decent concentration of firepower for a Troops unit. It's pretty much either that or the classic Lasplas objective camping unit. Their primary advantage over Tacticals is both the heavy and the special weapon being available in 5-man squads, allowing you to get more good weapons on the board without paying for Bolters you don't really want anyway.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.
