Hello folks,

I'm just about getting to the end of my 6000pts Space Wolves legion force now and was starting to think about maybe getting a (less extensive) traitor force - 30K is relatively quiet in my area, and I think it would help to have a force of each side for demo games with my friends, or just so I can help out whatever side is low on numbers for narrative events, etc.

As a Space Wolves player presently, I wanted to do something completely different - instead of assault, I wanted a gunline. Instead of predominantly MkIII armour, I wanted a bunch of MkIV Marines. A friend of mine just started Thousand Sons, so that ruled them out. In the end, I settled on Iron Warriors because I'm absolutely in love with the Perturabo sculpt.

I just snagged a pretty decent deal on eBay, and the haul includes:

• Perturabo himself
• 2x Iron Circle automata
• 2x Contemptor Dreadnought (1 with Khres Assault Cannon and fist, the other unpictured but I'm guessing with the same)
• 1x Leviathan Dreadnought built with Grav-flux Bombard and Siege Claw (but includes unbuilt Storm Cannon)

As a "Quick, get it on the table!" approach I was just planning on adding 2x15 Tacticals to make an okayish 2000pts army list, but the following is what I'd like to build it up to in order to play 3000pts games with. I'm trying to use everything from the initial haul, and I'd also really like to try and built as a reasonably fluffy list too - with big attrition style squads for my Tacticals, the Iron Circle bodyguard for Perturabo and lots of artillery style shooting. I'd also like the list to not be a complete pushover.

With all that in mind, does thi list seem like it'll do the job? Any very obvious mistakes? I'm still not 100% on what Rite of War to go for either!

Hey, thanks for the tips!

What if I did the following:

Hammer of Olympia RoW
Centurion becomes Cataphractii Siege Breaker with chainfist
Quad Launchers get Phosphex, drop to only 2
Tacticals become 3x10 (because of the RoW)
Basilisk becomes Medusa
Tyrants drop to 5 man
Adds a Sicaran Omega Tank Destroyer

Slightly less footsloggers and anti troop, but a little more armour and a pretty cool looking one. I know that the Venator is an option also, but I already have one for my Wolves and I'm trying my best not to retread ground.

My only concern is I don't have any anti air, really. What do you think?

Alright, so taking in all of your suggestions, this is the list I'm currently working towards now - thanks a lot for all the input so far guys, I think this list looks a lot better than my first pass.

This is going to be the list I shoot for initially, because all I need to go from what I've got in hand to this list is a single Calth box. In the future, my plan is to drop a single Quad Mortar and a pair of Tyrants for a Medusa for some extra flavour and to get more use out of the Extra Armour bonus from the RoW - it'll hopefully be a little less spammy, and I'll get to use up my 4th HS slot. In either case I really wanted this to be a not-so-mobile gunline army since it's such a polar opposite of play style from my Space Wolves.

++ The Age of Darkness (Legiones Astartes: Age of Darkness Army List) [2997pts] ++

+ HQ +

Siege Breaker [147pts]: Cataphractii Terminator Armour, Combi-Weapon, On Foot, Thunderhammer (or Chainfist)
. Consul: Siege Breaker
With the Siege Breaker, I'm planning on using either the Calth model initially and the Praetor model from Warhammer World later when I pick one up. They both end up costing the same amount of points, but if nothing else I really love how the WHW model with the Thunder Hammer and Combi-Volkite looks - very Iron Warriors, IMO.

'Iron Circle' Domitar-Ferrum Class Battle-automata Maniple [410pts]: 2x Domitar-Ferrum Class Battle Automata

Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought [180pts]: Kheres Pattern Assault Cannon x 2

Quad Launcher Support Battery, Legion [240pts]: Phosphex Canister Shot, 3x Rapier, Legion

Tactical Squad, Legion [125pts]: 9x Tactical Space Marines, Legion
. Additional Wargear: Bolters
. Tactical Sergeant, Legion: Bolter

+ Heavy Support +

Iron Havoc Support Squad [270pts]: 6x Iron Havoc, 6x Missile Launcher (with Frag, Krak, & Flakk missiles)
. Iron Havoc Sergeant: Missile Launcher (with Frag, Krak, & Flakk missiles)

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought Talon [330pts]
. Leviathan Siege Dreadnought: Armoured Ceramite, Grav-flux Bombard, Leviathan Storm Cannon, Twin-linked Volkite Caliver, Twin-linked Volkite Caliver

Tyrant Siege Terminator Squad [555pts]: 2x Chainfist, 9x Tyrant Terminator, Tyrant Siege Master

+ Allegiance +

and Allegiance, Legion: IV: Iron Warriors, Traitor

Rite of War: The Hammer of Olympia

+ Lords of War +

The Primarch Perturabo [490pts]: After Istvaan

++ Total: [2997pts] ++

What do you guys think now? Any major holes? A part of me is considering dropping 2x Iron Havocs and the Armoured Ceramite on the Leviathan for a brace of Rhinos for two of the Tactical Squads for objective grabbing, but I'm not 100% sold on the idea.

Good advice, thank you!

Sadly, the Bots can't deep strike. All in all, they seem.. pretty limp for the points, and ultimately, I know Pert and his 2 Bodyguard isn't a particularly great way to spend 900pts in a 3K list - but aside from the gunline playstyle, those models are the reasons I'm playing IW and I just can't cut them out. In basically any case, my thoughts were hoping the 10 Tyrants firing at BS5 with Tank Hunters plus my Havocs would hopefully glance stuff like Spartans to death - and if they made it close enough, then the Iron Circle, Chainfists, Pert and Leviathan would do the chopping.

With that said, I absolutely did not think about Flare Shields, and that's a very good point. As much as I'd hoped to get away without any Lascannons, I'm not sure I can.

You're also right, I think, about Hammer of Olympia being a bit of a waste without taking 4 HS options. I think the above list with the Medusa and Rhino tweaks might just about justify it, but as I'm aiming to build a list with just one Calth box first, I'll take your advice on The Irondire instead.

My next attempt, featuring Melta Rhinos and Lascannons on the Havocs:

Tyrants are only bs4 and don't have tank hunter unfortunately. You can make them bs5 with a master of signals, although that's a lot of points for a few extra hits.

True, but the Siege Breaker gives them Tank Hunter when he joins their Squad, and Perturabo's Cognis-Signum gives them +1 BS if he doesn't shoot his wrist cannons, which seems like a fair trade to me. (Edit: Unless I've got something horribly wrong! Please do correct me if I'm missing something, I really appreciate the feedback.)

This was sort of of my thinking as to why I'd keep the Pert and the Tyrant's in the backline with the rest of the army - the Tyrant's would benefit from Pert, and it means I've got a 6 man BS5 Iron Havoc's squad kicking out 5 Lascannons and a Missile Launcher and a 10-man BS5 Tyrant squad launching 20 krak missiles per turn.

Reg bots I forgot you need four to bodyguard Perturabo. Great models though, and like you, they were what started me on iron warriors. I had intended to get six, but building two drove me to despair.

They are frightfully irritating from a hobby perspective. I'm not sure how far I'll end up taking this army, as it's mostly a change things up alternative to my Space Wolves (my go to 'bit of everything' force), as I think my local scene is quite loyalist heavy, but if I ever go beyond 3000pts, I might just go nuts and take the full 6 Iron Circle, along with Perturabo and his Pimpmobile Party Wagon Shadowsword. After building and painting a Fellblade for my Space Wolves, the idea of working with the fully plastic Baneblade kit and getting to do some kit-bashing with it sounds like a real good time, hobby wise.
