Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but how do most people paint their Alpha Legion armies? What colors do you use? Can you share some photos or point to well painted armies in battle reports?

Well aware of the examples from the Codex and the painting guide. More concerned with how people are actually painting them.

My local gaming scene features a number of AL armies, each of which looks very different. While blue and silver is a common combination, there's one that sticks with the suggested GW colors of blue with green highlights. There's another that's a blueish green, similar to Sons of Horus colors. There's another that's all red with white iconography. There's another that's all black, with blue highlights. There are many others.

Most of the players I've spoken to have cited fluff reasons for changing the color scheme, or the fact WYSIWYG is a thing of the past (at least outside tournaments.) A few folks have pointed to the fact they didn't play AL before 8th edition and didn't want to repaint their Chaos Warband to get good rules for once.

But I sense custom colors is the norm, and this is not just a local thing. Would love to know everyone's thoughts.

I paint mine with green flesh and barbaric weapons. None of them wear helmets and all have fanged, toothy maws. They are hulking and muscular in appearance. In many ways, the look exactly like Orks.

But don't be fooled! For aren't we all Alpharius?

In all seriousness I don't collect them myself though they are the Chaos legion I most like the fluff of and would probably gravitate to should I ever have a ton of money and time on my hands.

I've seen a beautiful turquoise metallic colour that just looked incredible. I believe the painted mixed a few paints to achieve the look. That's what I'd go for, personally.

Here's the scheme and instructions; https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=alpha+legion&rlz=1C1GGRV_enGB752GB754&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjFiLzs-PDZAhVJP5oKHS1UDJkQ_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=623#imgrc=EgR1Nt8pmZ8ghM:

These days whatever you want and just pick up AL rules because of gaming benefits. Actually that goes for all legions/chapter/regiments/whatever. Paint your models ultramarines, use blood angel rules if they give you better gaming power. That's the current trend. Thank GW for their snowball trait rules for free bonus rules.

Painting wise...

Google Migsula Alpha Legion. That is how I think they should look.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Using the paints at my disposal, I went with maccrage blue base, with temple blue and moot green highlights, then biel tan green shade that created a nice teal color.

That's easy bud. It is [REDACTED] with [REDACTED] highlights and [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] iconography.

Similarly, are you talking about the correct legion...because the first rule of the Alpha Legion is you don't talk about the Alpha Legion.

I painted mine very dark blue with a Drakenhof nightshade wash and silver trims. Inspired by the 3.5 ed codex version of Alpha Legion- they almost look black. Green for details like the eyes and hydra emblem. EDIT my avatar is a CSM unit leader using that scheme

I tried metallic blue/green but couldn't get it to work at the time. I also like the dark blue with green highlights method but I can't stand edge highlighting over entire models, I usually just make the effort with smaller details that stand out

I would say popular schemes are 3 different types.

1.) Blue & Silver ( HH ) https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/786779-AL%20contemptor%202%20wip.html
2.) Blue, Silver with Green highlighting ( Modern Day) https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/715258-.html
3.) Dark Themes Seagrass / Viridian & Silver (Semi Popular) [url]https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/828026-Betrayal%20at%20Calth%20Alpha%20Legion.html

Far as my thoughts on it, I really love the Seagrass / Viridian with Silver. Though I see the Blue & Silver as the traditional color scheme. I feel like the modern scheme is kind of meh... I really don't like it, it feels very.... out of place at times like its trying to hard. It might be that the green fights with the silver as the highlight not sure. I do understand what you mean with the random color schemes though. Alpha really does have a lot of takes on presentation next to other legions EC kind of has this issue too though.

I think many people fight over how much blue and green to use. And how to use it... Just look at the different types of blues used at times and you will start to notice.
Green seems to be a decorative thing, like capes, filigree, artistic stand outs. It's pretty much how the modern Alpha uses green. Though I think the Seagrass / Viridian themes are good at dulling out and giving a more sinister vibe. It also kind of goes with the whole 'Hydra' thing. Which is why I think people like running a sea blue/green instead.

Silver seems like its the color everyone can agree upon though...

My scheme is really simple and it echoes the blue/silver theme mentioned so far ...

Kantor Blue for the power armour. Leadbelcher for the metallic rims. Warpstone Glow for the eyes/plasma.

It's a little darker than what the codex represents, but it gets the job done.

For any exposed flesh, I use Nurgling Green, but that's just for fluff reasons.
