This is probably a ridiculously silly question, but I have been told by a couple of different people that you can only take a free relic in the same detachment as your warlord. The various codexes make no mention of that restriction that I can find; they only say that you have to have a warlord from their faction (e.g. to take a CSM relic you have to have a CSM character as your warlord). I always assumed that as long as you have a CSM character as your Warlord (e.g. Abaddon), you can take one (and only one) free relic on any CSM character in your army regardless of which detachment they are in. Obviously you could use the appropriate stratagem to get more relics. What I have been told a couple of times is that if you want to have a relic on a character in a different detachment from your Warlord, you have to use the stratagem to get it. That doesn't sound right to me, but I figure it's prudent to ask before I get in trouble in a tournament sometime.

Quote from the CSM codex :

"If your army is led by a chaos space marine warlord, you may give one of the following artefacts of chaos to a chaos space marine character in your army."

If you have a CSM warlord you can choose a free artefact for any CSM character in your army, doesnt have to be your warlord. If you want additional artefacts for any CSM character you can buy them with the stratagem.

Yeah relic selection does not interact with detachments in any way.
Only important things are who the warlord is and what faction the characters you want to give the relic to are.

(With the wierd caveat that non daemon faction units can't use the daemon relic stratagem even if they have the right keywords. But no such stipulation was put in for the free daemon relic)

Yes, you get 1 free relic from your warlords faction, regardless of detachments.
