I'm currently powering through the Horus Heresy book series and absolutely love the Emperor's Children... In the past (as a male teen) I definitely wasn't mature or confident enough to rock the pink hedonistic army, however now I'm very excited to make them as an army.

I've got a bunch of models as I originally planned on playing Death Guard but my enthusiasm for their lore and due to their strong rules, the frequency people use them puts me off.

Model wise, I've got the Dark Imperium Boxed Set, 3 Space MArine Bike Squad Boxes, Chaos Space Marines Chaos Desolator Squad, a standard Chaos Space Marine squad assembled and some Horus Heresy Cataphractii Terminators... Haha all planned to convert into Death Guard but can be repurposed as Emperor's Children.

My question though is how does Chaos fear in the meta, what units are competitive and worth focusing on? Any army building tips? All I remember from 3rd/4th edition was HQ + 2 troops as a staple but I was never really any good lol. I mainly wanna make an army for the modelling and painting aspect but I want to keep in mind the ability to play in future.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

your mind

Do you have the Index?
Have you seen any of the new codices?
If not, I can send the info - PM me.

Use what you have.
The DG are gonna stay DG.
You could trade them.
Or, use them as a separate detachment
and use until yo get your purestrain EmpChild army rollin.

Are those regular space marine bikes?
Put the extra spiky bits on the bikes,
add moar skullz,
maybe use green-stuff to sculpt the odd nipple clamp,
maybe add the odd sex-slave in chains,
and stay general purpose,
get your paint job down,
...

Noise marines. You need noise marines,
so maybe pick up a few of the sonic blaster packs,
and
you need these:

Perhaps also use these:
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-WW/Telerac-Pattern-Volkite-Culverins-Set

And I like this model pretty well:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Chaos-Space-Marines-Lucius-the-Eternal

Maybe add a vindicator or similar, nothin like Slaaneshi vehicles spurting mortal goo all over the table.

Oh yeah, add some warp talons. Cool models.
Maybe you can trade off or sell those Primaris marines for something on the list.

Some thoughts to get you started:

- The Chaos Space Marine Codex is a necessary starting point. Buy it.

- Emperor's Children benefit from a Legion trait that allows them to always fight first in the fight phase. Initiative is gone, alternate activation is in.

- Despite that trait, Slaanesh Cult Troops - Noise Marines - are shooting specialists. Basic sonic weapons fire 4 times at 24 inches and are good against infantry. Larger sonic weapons have some range and are good against heavy infantry.

- Terminators are 2 wounds a piece now, but there's also a lot of guns that can kill 2 wound models. They can carry combi-weapons, which now allow unlimited shots with both firing modes.

- There's now a thing called detachments (which replaces the old Force Organization Chart) and you can take allies from other Codexes. You might not be aware Chaos Daemons have their own Codex. You might want to look at it and think about Daemonettes / Seekers to round out an army.

- There is a rumor Emperor's Children may be getting their own Codex sometime in 2018. So it might be a good time to get started on them.

Good luck!

Are people pretty flexible with what counts as sonic weaponry? Because those Volkite weapons looks amazing, first time viewing them

Original idea was to convert them to chaos terminators or even obliterators (current models aren't to my liking) but yeah I might need to do some trades.

Awesome, thanks for the tips. Any downside in running allies, I remember pure forces being more of a thing back when I was playing. New codex sounds exciting! Figures crossed but I remember Games Workshop timelines

A friend of mine uses the Volkite Caliver as Sonic Blasters and the Volkite Culverine for the Blastmaster, they look brilliant and as long as your opponent knows what they are there shouldn't be any problems.

Your standard primaris don't really have the bulk to look good as Terminators or Obliterators. For Terminators I'd just get a set of plastic Tartaros pattern termies and do a little converting if you feel the need. For Oblits I've seen a whole range of conversions using Termies, Primaris Aggressors and even Centurians, all of them look considerably better than the ugly failcast models they currently have.

For running allies the most important thing is to remember to keep them in separate detachments, your bonuses for running pure are based on detachments and not the army as a whole so keep the Emperors Children in one detachment and the Daemons in another for maximum benefit.
