Hey guys,

I was just looking at the 8th edition rules and damage/wounds for shooting.

It states that you can allocate wounds as you please, unless a model has already taken wounds, then the wounded model is prioritised.

Once wounds have been allocated and saving throws have been made, then damage is dealt, with excess damage being lost if the damage is greater than the models remaining wounds, the exception being mortal wounds of course.

My question is:

If I add a shield drone with a 4+ invulnerable save to my fire warrior strike team, and they receive 5 shots from a source, all 5 shots land, can I allocate all the wounds to the shield drone, make the invulnerable saves and be happy that I lost one model?

Seems absurd for 10 points....

Wounds are allocated and saves are taken one at a time, meaning that if a 1W model fails a 1D save then it's dead and cannot be allocated any more wounds.

If the model makes the save, then you can allocate it the next wound (and take another save), or allocate it to a different model.

See the sidebar on "Fast Dice Rolling" (same page as the start of the shooting phase rules), for more info.

Oh cheers mate, still think it's silly to put important rules on those sidebars

The important rule is in the main text here - the shortcut is in the sidebar. That the shortcut is the last edition's default is why peeps get it mixed up.

No you Can Not, the drone is not part of the unit.
It can only take the wound if it makes it's saviour protocol role.

That is an important note. Once the unit is deployed, that drone is a completely separate unit from the fire warriors. So it's not a mixed save unit at all.

I knew that was the case for the Index, but didn't know if it changed for the Codex, so didn't mention it.

The question is still relevant for other units (such as Assault Terminators with a mix of TH/SS and Claws).

Or Tau Crisis teams, which can take both a 2+ save and an invulnerable save as wargear.

The first answer has the right take, though. You're making saves 1 at a time here.

Oh of course the drone unit rule completely went over my head when I wrote this post.

But as mentioned above the question still got me thinking, so thanks for the feedback!

It does leave me wondering where (and if) shield drones have a place in my army :(

Shield drones have their Bodyguard rule, and Feel No Pain to negate the mortal wounds they take as a result.
