Hey everyone thanks for taking the time to read this!

I haven't been into 40K for several years, but am pumped to get a force going. Here is what I am looking for in an army:

Good for novice-intermediate player (more novice here, but hope to grow with it in ability), competitive list potential, prefer lower model count (or if higher not too intensive to paint), newer models are a plus!

Ruled out mostly due to fluff/look for me:

Tau, chaos daemons, vanilla type space marines, ultramarines, orks.

What I've seen makes me think possibly one of these, but I don't know much on their hopes to stand up to the strong lists people will be playing locally: Spaces wolves, Eldar/Craftworlds, Skittari, new custodes?

Custodes. From what I've seen, requires little expertise. Rate for low model count army.

Yeah I saw a 2k point list with only 19 models! Would they hold up against the lists people are building based on tournament winners (yranni, astra militarum, tyranids etc)?

Not as pure Custodes, no. But with allied detachments Custodes can be a very competitive army. Geoff Robinson's list is a good example:

Custodes are probably where you're wanting to go.

Shouldn't cost much dinner to get a fighting force on the table, either. Also puts you in the imperium soup in case you want to branch out a little later.

Thanks for linking that list and the help everyone. Is it a fun list for people to play against still or would it be considered cheap/cheese?

Would the Militarum Tempestus Scions models work in the soup list or are the guardsmen way better for what is needed?

Temptestus works pretty well in soup lists because they are able to perform on their own. Buy a couple squads, drop 'em on the flanks and force your opponent to actually split thier forces.

Perception of power is just that: perception. It is very subjective on your list vs your opponent's list vs your opponent's understanding of what is happening.

Not knowing that hurricane bolters spew out 12 shots each before running your chaff into a line of shield captains is probably going to be a bad time for someone. It isn't particularly broken, just frustrating.

Play the list you want to, try to stay away from the munchkin metagame around here, and I'm sure people won't have a problem.

Supreme Command of 3 Shield Captains on Bikes is pretty good, but hardly environment deforming.

It would depend on what the people you play would consider fun.

i personally would hate to fight against a butt load of mortars, cheap plasma and tanky doods.

but others may enjoy that.

if you are going into a super competitive meta then go balls to the walls. if its semi competitive or semi casual then i think a base of custodes then slowly adding in other parts of soup would be perfectly fine.

There's probably people who think something as innocuous as taking an IG infantry battalion is cheese, so someone's always going to complain.

What I'd do is just have a set of 2-3 lists you can run, and play a more competitive list against people who like to play more competitive games, and a more casual list against more casual players. Call it reverse list tailoring. A more casual Custodes list would be that 15-30 model stuff, with pure Custodes and no Imperium friends.
