New to the game thinking of picking up necrons and wanted to get some opions on necerons if they will be top tier or just a fun army to play?

I truly doubt it, simply because soup armies are really messed up right now. It is too easy to cherry pick the best units from 6 codexes to munchkin out an army, especially without your codex having models like Flying Hive Tyrants or Dark Reapers (units that can deform the state of the game). Not sure if Necrons have anything of that magnitude, but if they do, GW won't let it go for long.

Soup armies (Chaos, Imperium, Aeldari) simply have too much availability to different unit types that they can munchkin lists and poach the best units from a MUCH larger pool.

Edit: That said, so long as Necrons don't basement dwell with the grey knights, they should be fine and fun. They just likely won't be winning any LARGE tournaments against soup armies the way that they are.

Necrons basically have to march into IG gunlines. That's not gonna work in general.

Dark Eldar have speed and now a TON of shots at BS3+. They look pretty terrifying.

Dark Eldar are getting a codex in 6 days. So there's no opinion of them that is valid... well, outside of they are hot garbage in the index.

For what it is worth: they're looking good now. And they're going to soup pretty darn well with the rest of the Aeldari (Harlequins, Ynnari, and Craftworld).

I hate soup :(

AM is top Tier in almost every way to play them.
In the former ed, Necrons with Decurion were low top tier.
But in this ed, I guess Necrons will become at most low mid tier.

Anything with the Imperium tag that is not named Grey Knights is probably a good start.

Should be a FAQ out soon that will be chapping the butts of Tyranid and Craftworld players, so use caution before getting in bed with those armies from a competitive place.

May look at Chaos, too, if that fits your tastes.

Basically, Imperium and Chaos are the go-to tags for a bit of muscle flex. You can fix your army by souping in another flavor of that tag to shore up shortcomings or meta shifts.

Death Guard alone will not get you to the top tables, but Mortarion, Pox Walkers, and Typhus are a good start to a competitive army (more Typhus and Pox Walkers, but Morty isn't bad).

If you want to win tournaments, then you're going to need to play some games... Enough games so that you would be able to answer that question yourself. Bes thting to do is get an army you think is cool and started playing. Learn your local meta, and when you're at the top of it with whatever you've chosen start thinking about whether an army swap is needed.

Depending on the level of the competitions, be prepared to be buying a lot of armies. Flavour of the month really is that at the moment. Your army can be top top tier for a short period unlike previous editions where dominance could last years.

It seems like you are looking for an absolute top tier army, which is fine, but be ready to spend a ton of money and an insane amount of time painting every month. With the rapid release of FAQs, Chapter Approved, and Codexes you are starting at a time where what is considered "top tier" changes dramatically very quickly. Id personally look for an army you like the background of and the look so that if in 3-6 months they go from great to bad your still be able to enjoy yourself.

That being said if you like anything imperium or chaos i would go with them for being competitive. Soup isn't going anywhere from a marketing standpoint and those two factions will do it better then anyone else because of the respective size.
