Subject: So I wanted to play WYSIWYG
|

So, I actually started out now after playing death guard (Dark Imperium) just to try out the game and recently got the drukhari codex and the old start collecting.
But looking at this box, how am I supposed to remotely play without proxying weapons?
The Archon literally has only a splinter pistol and a huskblade which would make him ok in melee but pretty much crap overall (imo if he's going to melee he should pack a blast pistol) but the whole box only has 1(!) blastpistol and I looked up online: the archon has no other weapon options.
Are the Start Collecting boxes all like that and do the normal boxes offer more bits so I can actually play the units in a way that I want to play them?
Should I not get the other start collecting boxes if I want to play without proxying?
A friend told me it's the same with his Necron Overlord who has other weapon options that are not included by buying him.

Unless you religiously play PL I wouldn't bother with WYSIWIG. You don't even know if the options you take now will still be worth taking come December after FAQs and CA.

You put the blast pistol from the Kabalites on him, they don't need it.
There are also a lot of bitsellers on e-bay and elsewhere which you can order bits from.
BTW, complaints like this are the reason why GW has just removed options from the rules recently. No offence, but please learn to kitbash.

A lot of options that do not have models have been removed in recent rules. Some of them are still in the Index (so technically still playable for now) but were removed in the Codex, some were removed before that.

GW as recently as 6th ed has seemingly had a policy of "no model=no rules". Much to the chagrin of many players, myself included as an integral part of this hobby is kitbashing and creating new stuff.
But then GW got in a fight with Chapterhouse and went and took their ball home with them. So now we're stuck with Primaris with feth all options (wanna take a power axe on your Leiutenant? Lol no.) and options that were iconic to their armies (*cough* Palanquins *cough*) being removed from the codexes.

Agreed. Everyone in the hobby needs to learn how to kitbash.
If it's not on the model, make it yourself.
The reduction in options given by Codexes recently has really turned me off. I should be allowed to put whatever I want on any Character.

No, GW removed options because they are paranoid about other companies producing bits to fill the holes in their range, and rather than fill those holes themselves, they chose the worst route for everyone concerned and removed them.

No. Just use the bits from other kits or from bitsellers. In this particular case your Kabalite Warriors won't really need the blast pistol. I understand that hunting bits is annoying though, especially for army that is not Space Marines.
What kits exactly you have available and how would you ideally wish to arm them?

The Kabalite warriors will be magnetised so that 2 of them will either have a shredder or a shadow catapult (?), I don't see why I would use dark lances on them or a splinter cannon.
The Archon will be magnetised so I can switch his weapon loadout as much as I want.
The reavers have a magnetised blaster on the bottom of 1 of them, the other 2 have to use splinter cannons anyways. My friend fethed up when she made them and glued one of them a grav talon but I don't think any non drukhari player recognizes that vehicle equipment that you have to google up to even know how it looks.
A friend of mine just told me about blue stuff that I can use to make my own bits in combination with greenstuff, I think I'll try that out to make more shadow pistols.

Incidentally, as far as I am aware there is no difference in what you get in the 'start collecting' boxes compared to buying the individual sets.

okay then I might as well get the wychcult starter next? altho I don't see the point of the venom in that box. I think a raider to bring up 10 wyches would be more effective since they really need combat drugs to shine.
Which of my troops would even benefit from a venom? Court of Archon? Wracks?

The most popular (==optimal) bits are usually sold out at bit sellers across the board. Especially for new codex, when everyone trys to modify their army to fit to the new ruleset.
Kit-bashing is awesome if you have some material to use from previous projects, but for someone new to the hobby and starting a new army, this is really not a valid option.
The best these players can do, is to switch over some weapon from another sprue, if that exists.

That's kinda sad and yes, Kitbashing is out of the question since I don't have any other parts to bash from. I'm thinking about using that bluestuff, if somebody asks me why those models look slightly off I'd just say it's because I fethed up with the glue or sth lol.

I think character boxes should just come with every option they can take. If there are extras, they can likely be used on other models.
For other units like devastators, where you likely want all of the same weapon but the box only comes with 1-2 of each or whatever, they should sell smaller add on kits with something like x5 las cannons or x5 heavy bolters.
If the guns are good, people will buy the addon kits, and if the guns aren't good, GW can buff them so they are.
Also at some point in the future 3D printing is going to become a much more viable option when it comes to getting custom bits made, so GW really need to get their act together.

Some people in the store told me GW does it so people buy the boxes for example 5 times, but I think that's only an absolute minority.
I personally don't know anybody who would use 5 blightlord terminators and buy the box 5 times so they all get combi melters for example, not even the rich guy.

I really wish they would sell sprues of extra weapons. It would be perfectly feasible, as there are bunch of chapter conversion bit sprues for Space Marines. Similarly there could be 'Drukhari Weapons and Relics' sprue 'Space Marine Weapons and Relics' sprue etc. I think more people would buy those than conversion sprues aimed at single Marine chapter.

I will say that, when you're starting out this is very much a problem, but once you get stuck into the hobby you'll quickly build up a bitzbox of all the leftover stuff you havn't used. It just takes a few kits.
But for wysiwyg, only the most hardasses are going to give you any guff, and you get a lot of slack for being A: a new player just starting their collection, and B: playing a wacky xeno army where noone knows what anything looks like anyways.
The most important thing is that you and your opponent can tell that a model is armed with something different.
Hell, when I first started playing imperial guard, i was woefully undersupplied for meltaguns. But I had a lot of mortar shells laying around, so I attached them to the barrels of lasguns. Presto, melta-rifle-grenades. Were they wysiwyg? Not really. But they were a pretty good kitbash counts-as, and they were easily identifiable as some sort of special wargear, and that's all that really mattered.

By the way on a different note, the ossefactor of my wracks says that if it kills a model of a unit it does an aditional mortal wound on a 4+. If that mortal wound also kills something, do I roll another D6? Technically my weapon killed another model there, didn't it?

They don't call it kit bashing.
They call it "cunningly designed inter-kit compatability" as highlighted by their Kit Insight: Drukhari Scourges focus on the Warhammer Community page.

For space marines, I find mixing tac boxes, command boxes, and Dev boxes gives me a good mix of bodies, special weapons, and sarge upgrades.
Don't have much advice for DEldar though.

You'd be surprised how much people will spend. I wouldn't be surprised if someone out there has bought 5 Celeastine kits so the can have a unit of 10 plastic seraphim.
