This is just for friendly games and such, and in no way am I accusing anyone of cheating, but do any of you make terrain that caters or slightly improves your chances in games? I was just looking at the shortcomings of large units like Knights and WraithKnights and such, and they seem to be really exposed to shots from all around the board. I imagine someone would build really tall terrain structures to deal with this in friendly games, but how often do people do this for their armies with units under different circumstances?

If the truth can destroy it, then it deserves to be destroyed.

Tables should have large LOS blocking terrain regardless, if only to keep shooty armies honest.

Obstacles are there to keep assault armies honest, naturally.

I thought I’d built tall ruins with no ground floor windows to block LOS and ensure a better game.

Enter the Aeldari with “Fire And Fade”, camping in the ground floor, and each turn walking out, Shooting, then walking back inside the ruin.

GAHHHHH.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"

I have ruins that can hide a warhound despite not having a warhound.

Also, the shortcoming of a knight isn't its difficulty in getting out of sight it is its poor offensive capabilities.

I typically throw some terrain out there (2-3 LoS blocking terrain etc) and ask if my opponent is okay with it, if not we can work it out between two adults

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

The best way to make terrain as neutral as possible is to ask someone else to put them on the table - or play on a table with pre-arranged terrain. If the players put terrain, of course they'll try to maximize their benefits

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union

Personally I feel that this is a disadvantage that should be inherent in large units and I say this as a person that played Wraithknights back in the day.

Small units should have an easier time to hide compared to larger units. Gives that kaiju battle feeling: small forces hiding in the rubble while taking shots at the big monster.

Regarding the table itself I try to make it as much of a mirror setup as possible. This way both parties have the same setup area and chances.
