I can't find these anywhere so I'm asking here in hope someone knows:

Most game systems have 'guidelines' on what can and can't be done with thier IP in regards to fan art, stories, websites, apps, etc. I've been goofing with a mobile app I built that helps me learn rules for 40k and was wondering what GW's direction would be if I wanted to release this to the app stores.

They would shut it down if they found out. They shut down most apps that use their IP that isn't licensed.

Yep, one of the least friendly companies with regard to any kind of IP infringement.

Basically if you haven't paid them they'll send a cease and desist, if that fails they'll sue even if they don't have a case.

Gee that's a tough one. GW has ripped off so many other IPs such as 2000AD, Rebellion, Alien franchise and so on (to name a few) it's hard to really know what counts as GW IP.

As others have said though, GW likes to pretend it came up with the IP it uses and will jealously protect it, even if they are IP magpies

Thousand Sons: 3850pts / Space Marines Deathwatch 5000pts / Dark Eldar Webway Corsairs 2000pts / Scrapheap Challenged Orks 1500pts / Black Death 1500pts

Saga: (Vikings, Normans, Anglo Danes, Irish, Scots, Late Romans, Huns and Anglo Saxons), Lion Rampant, Ronin: (Bushi x2, Sohei), Frostgrave: (Enchanter, Thaumaturge, Illusionist)
