The Big FAQ explains how the new beta rule works. When you make a detachment, you need a single keyword linking all units inside that detachment. That keyword can no longer be Chaos, Imperium, Aeldari, Ynnari or Tyranids, unless the Detachment in question is a Fortification Network. Example: You cannot have a Patrol detachment of a Space Marine Captain and a Imperial Guard Infantry Squad anymore, because they have no keywords in common that is not on the prohibited list. This only applies INSIDE a detachment though, you can have a Patrol of a Space Marine Captain and Space Marine Tactical Squad (Shared Keyword could be <CHAPTER> or ADEPTUS ASTARTES), along with another Patrol Detachment of Imperial Guard Company Commander and Imperial Guard Infantry Squad (Shared Keyword could be <REGIMENT> or ASTRA MILITARUM), while the entire army itself is legal for Matched Play because every unit has the IMPERIUM keyword. The main thing this hurts is taking single Assassins or Sisters of Silence in Index Imperial Faction armies like Space Wolves, or taking Codex Tyranid units in a GSC detachment.

Wow, thank you for clearing this up.
I didn't know you could mix a space marine captain with an astra militarum as troop prior the big FAQ.
But, where does it say soup is not allowed? Which rule limits this action
ok as long as they are in different detachment its perfectly legal. I get it.
You cant have 1 detachment with celestine, sm captain, IG troops.

Battle Brothers is the rule that prohibits or limits "soup".
You're allowed to have army lists which are "soup" - an army list consisting of a Blood Angels Patrol, an Astra Militarum Battalion, and a Custodes Supreme Command is perfectly legal (and probably quite competitive).
What you are no longer able to do is mix multiple units in the same detachment based upon the restricted keywords - Imperium, for instance, is longer a valid keyword for units within a single detachment to share. Thus, you can no longer field the classic Imperium Soup Battalion - Celestine, a Company Commander, and 3 units of Space Marine Scouts.

People were using IMPERIUM and CHAOS as the common faction keyword to link up the different sub-factions into one legal detachment. Now, you will need a second common faction Keyword, since just having IMPERIUM or CHAOS will not count.
Edited for clarity.

To be clear, you only need one, not two. It's just that IMPERIUM, CHAOS, and AELDARI no longer count *for that purpose*.
They still count for other purposes (such as Army faction), and anything else that shares only 1 Keyword is still a valid Detatchment faction.
