Hey all,

I am a rather odd type who really likes Primaris Marines and with the dropping of the new Deathwatch codex I thought I would try to put together a Primaris only 2000 point 2 battalion list:

Battalion 1:
Captain : MC Auto Bolter, Powersword - 98 pts
Librarian : Bolt pistol, Forcesword - 102 pts

Troops:
5xIntercessors w/stalker bolt rifles, 4xHvy Plasma Hellblasters,1xAggressor w/Bolt storm gauntlets,frag - 291 pts

2x5 intercessors, 2xHellblasters,1xReivers, Sgt w/Powersword, Auxiliary grenade launcher - 392 pts

Elites:
1x5 Reivers w/Bolt carbines - 115 pts

Battalion 2:
Captain as above - 98 pts
Chaplain - 86 pts

Troops:
Same as above battalion 683 pts

Elites:
1x5 Reivers w/Bolt carbines 115 pts

Total: 1980 pts

For relics I was thinking of taking the tome of Ectolades, not sure which warlord trait to take. I,be also thought about dropping down to one battalion and having three mix intercessor squads and maybe taking two Redemptor dreadnoughts.

Anyway I appreciate any feedback you may have thanks.

Nothing odd about liking Primaris marines.

I don't see any transport there for your units, so they are going to be marching up the board. I am preemptively worried about multi-wound shooting from Tau and Necrons.

Do Aggressors offer immunity from morale checks, like Terminators?

Seems like Primaris are either you love then or hate them, I personally love them.

I agree, transportation is an issue with them, but I cannot put in repulsion tanks, unless I dropped down to one battalion.

So to combat the lack of transports I will rely on the teleportation stratagem which allows several units to be put in a teleported and brought in later.

The two larger stalker Bolter/heavy plasma squads will anchor the backfield and hunt vehicles and what not.

The reivers will deep strike and harass the enemy back field

Overall I will have 13 command points to use over the army so I should be fine I think.

The only big thing I worry about is anti armor, but with 16 Hellblasters, half of which are heavy variants I think I should be fine.

Hey Chaplain,

I like and have started a Primaris Deathwatch army too, you're not alone! ;-)

Your list looks good. The only comment I would make is that auto bolt rifles and assault Plasma incinerators are preferable to me to the Stalker and heavy variants in the 'Hellcessor squads'. The range: 6+D6+24" will be adequate to be able to deal damage across the field and the volume of fire is far greater.

In my Hellcessor squads I do also use one Plasma Exterminator Inceptor instead of a Hellblaster to mitigate the consequence of a fast unit like a Wave Serpent tagging the unit in combat and rendering it powerless.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing with this list.

Thanks for the reply Cilithan!

The main reason for the stalker Bolters and heavy plasma is the synergy I see with the Aggressor. I like the ability for the squad to move if it needs to and still shoot without penalty.

I will have to think about adding the Inceptor to the squad...

I may have to play around with that.

Any thoughts about warlord trait? That’s where I feel like I am struggling.

I have also thought about kitbashing a Watchmaster from a primaris marine just to keep the scale consistent, would anyone have an issue with that?

Thanks again for the replies.

The stalker bolt rifles are really never worth it. The other variants can fire twice which is way more powerful than that extra AP. The assault variant has its uses with aggressors and the standard bolt rifle really is best value overall.

Inceptors are pretty awesome in any capacity (with plasma exterminators), and making the squad being able to fall back and shoot is pretty good. They're expensive, but they can dish out some damage. I plan on trying a squad with 5 intercessors (with assault bolt rifles), 3 aggressors (dakka) and 2 inceptors (plasma). The unit will have T5 and an insane amount of attackdice. They can handle themselves in cc too. Well, that's the theory anyway. Put them in teleportarium with a dreadnought and a libby and fire away.

As for Warlord trait I'd go with Lord of hidden Knowledge. It's a free sort of single dice reroll CP and you might get some CP back which is always good. Extra damage is nice and all, but I like to get my damage from my actual combat units instead of some bonus damage from characters. They usually do enough extra damage. It's nice if you have a JP captain with a Thunder Hammer or something, but even then it's pretty situational. But that's just my humble opinion.

I'd have no issues playing a kitbashed Watch Master since I plan on doing the same thing myself. At our club it's usually ok if a model represents the rules well enough.

I'm not an expert or anything, our club isn't very competitive either, but I've got some hope for primaris deathwatch.

Highly recommend you to put a Inceptor in each squad. Your guys have awesome firepower no doubt, but they have concern of being tied up by hordes of Guants or something tough like Wraiths in combat and those firepower are wasted for at least one turn.

Not meaning to hijack, I'm also in the mood for some Primaris only Deathwatch this is what I've come up with so far as I own most of the models:

Battalion 1

Watch Master - Bane Bolts, Guardian Spear
Watch Captain Jump Pack - Beacon, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield

5x Intercessors - Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol
4x Hellblasters - Plasma Incinerator

5x Intercessors - Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol
4x Hellblasters - Plasma Incinerator

5x Intercessors - Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol
4x Hellblasters - Plasma Incinerator

Battalion 2

Watch Master - Guardian Spear
Primaris Watch Captain - Power Sword, MC Auto Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol

5x Intercessors - Auto Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol
3x Aggressors - Flamestorm Gauntlets
Reiver - Heavy Bolt Pistol, Combat Knife
Inceptor - Assault Bolter

5x Intercessors - Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol
3x Aggressors - Auto Boltstorm Gauntlets
Reiver - Heavy Bolt Pistol, Combat Knife
Inceptor - Assault Bolter

5x Intercessors - Bolt Rifle, Bolt Pistol
3x Aggressors - Auto Boltstorm Gauntlets
Reiver - Heavy Bolt Pistol, Combat Knife
Inceptor - Assault Bolter

= 1999 points

Yeah, the unfortunate truth of the Stalker options is that they're locked to 1 shot and nothing really makes up for that. The Assault weapons are pretty compelling, but the loss of AP on the Intercessors that you have to take 5 of really hurts the output of that unit. They have a great volume of fire at their threat range though and might be the best on foot config. The basic Rapid Fire stuff at Rapid Fire range is pretty fantastic and probably the overall best setup if you pay CP to deepstrike them.

In any config, Inceptors probably have the best output of anything aside from Aggressors standing still. Their weakness is definitely their frailty for the point you put into them, but Intercessors give you a lot of ablative wounds. I'd probably always add one before a Hellblaster, but never more than one.

Ok once again thank you for the replies what about the following list:

2000 points two Battalions all Primaris

Battalion 1:
Primaris watch Captain w/MC Auto Bolter,Powersword - 98 pts
Primaris Librarian - 102 pts

Troops:
3x5 Intercessors, 2xHellblaster, 1xAggressor w/Bolt gauntlets/frag, 1xInceptor w/assault Bolters, 1xReiver w/heavy bolt pistol and combat knife - 807 pts

Battalion 2:
Same as above but with a Primaris Chaplain instead of a librarian

Total for the list 1998 pts

Thoughts?

Maybe reconsider your kill team loadouts so that they have specific roles rather than having the same mix in all of them

Ok what kill team load outs would be useful?

I like the idea of mixed squads, from a visual perspective, but how useful are they?

I like Aggressors for their firepower, but can their special ability be useful for either Intercessors or Hellblasters?

I understand that stalker pattern Bolt rifles and heavy plasma tend to be looked down upon but what about a squad or two with the Assault variants of the weapons or do the normal ones just win out?

Also how important would it be to include inceptors or would you just fire special issue ammunition from Bolt pistols into combat?

Any and all thoughts and comments would be great.

I really want to put this army together, just having problems nailing down my squads or what would be useful.

Thanks

those big 10 marine squads take a risk on moral checks

consider this option
a mix of intercessors and hellblasters
various options
6 x intercessors, 4x hellblasters ..combat squad them into 3/2
5 x intercessors, 5x hell blasters .. combat squad them... 3/2 , 2/3

a single squad for teleportarium alpha strike, might consist of 5 intercessors, 2 aggressors (i prefer 1 with bolt gaunts and 1 with flame gaunts) , 3 inceptors with plasma

While primaris may seem nice, do not forget about the options that regular deathwatch veterans have, do not get caught up in the temptation to give them all some sort of combi weapon/power weapon, points will rack up fast
10 DW Veterans, all with stormbolters and chainsword will make for a brutal combo , especialy if leaping out of a rhino into RF range followed by a charge (note on points, this squad costs 200 points, 10 intercessors costs 200 points, twice the firepower, half the durability, and a third more CC attacks from the veterans)

Thanks for the reply,

My main issue is I want to go pure primaris, I do not like the scale difference between the new primaris and the older marine.

In many ways I wish GW would unleash more primaris upon us but that’s just me. I prefer the scaling of primaris due to the true scale nature of them, but this is a tangent for another topic...

Should I stay with two battalions and try to get 13 command points or could I make one battalion and be in the 8cp range and give my warlord the knowledge of the forbidden and just try to regain command points that way?

In which case I would run three squads of Primaris for troops with various load outs, and then squeeze in 2 redemptor dreadnoughts with macro plasma guns.

Then I could use the teleporter stratagem and deep strike them and a squad similar to the one posted above along with a couple of 5 man reivers for behind enemy line mayhem?

Thoughts, please keep them coming I love the discussion and it helps with the refinement of the list.

Thanks agai .

it depends on your local meta, so take my suggestions with a spoon full of salt

one major weakness I see is lack of serious AT weapons, high strength, multi damage (ie lascannons), only realy available on dreadnaughts and landraiders and razorbacks,
Repulsor is an option but that's a lot of points in one model
Plasma does ok, it has the punch, but not the big punch of a lascannon

this is a personal preference for me, but I prefer to play the Deathwatch as a small special forces strike force attached to my core ultramarines army list,
A Patrol detachment or very specialized battalion detachment, this play style just has that proper feel to it for me, spec ops pop outa the shadows and terminate key target
