With the Knight codex just around the corner I will be getting a few big bots. I would like to paint the chassis silver/metallic but I don't really want to buy like 3 spray cans of leadbelcher. I have used some metallic silver spray but it had a high gloss finish that was impossible to paint. Is there anything that would be similar?
I've found these but not sure how they would work.

I wouldn't necessarily go for paints from hardware stores, they're really not designed for the kind of stuff we need for modeling.
Army Painter brand sprays are quite good quality and designed for what we need, and they do both a darker and lighter metallic spray. They're also cheaper than the GW ones if that's your main concern.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

Generally for a silvery metallic you're going to want a matt grey undercoat anyway, not a metallic - the silver is one of the last coats you do. (You'd use Tans and browns for a gold/brass colour).
Even Forge World recommend non-GW paints for undercoating/base coating their kits (which generally are available at better hardware/auto parts stores).

If I were you I would just prime grey, and spray in a non-wasteful manner.
One can should be able to handle 3 knights. If it doesn't you might be going way too heavy on your leadbelcher, or maybe you did not prime thoroughly underneath and have to use more and more leadbelcher to get good coverage.
I think I probably base coated about 4000 points of adeptus mechanicus including a knight with 2 cans of leadbelcher. Primed matte grey first.

Thanks for the feedback. I will probably get a cheap can and try it out on a sprue to see what happens. I have a lot of industrial terrain that I can use it on if it isn't good on models. I do have some flat gray primer I can try it out with.
