So I am getting back into the game after leaving in 6th edition. I was never a competitive player, but still lost alot. I am hoping to gain some suggestions to complete my 2,000 point list before shelling out money to buy an army. This is for a casual list, but to be as close to competitive as possible. The Silver Drakes are a successor chapter to the Salamanders, but instead of overusing fire they overuse bullets to mow things down in a firing line. My current list is as follows:

Battalion:

Captain: Sentinel Jace "Jethro" Lyons
-Relic Blade
-Combi-Plasma
99 Points

Lieutenant: Major Sergeant Tristum Corvus
-Bolter and Chainsword
60 Points

Tactical Squad (10)
-Vanilla sergeant
-Heavy Bolter
-Plasma Gun
153 Points

Tactical Squad (10)
-Vanilla sergeant
-Heavy Bolter
-Plasma Gun
153 Points

Tactical Squad (5)
-Vanilla Sergeant
-Heavy Bolter
75 Points

Spearhead:

9th Company LT
-Bolter and Chainsword
60 Points

Devastator Squad (x4)
-Heavy Bolters (4)
-Vanilla Sergeant
105 Points each

Devastator Squad (x2)
-Lascannons (4)
-Vanilla Sergeant
165 Points each

CURRENT TOTAL: 1,350 Points

I am hoping for anyone to let me know how I can round out the last 650 points for my battalion and/or spearhead. I have thought about fielding two Land Raider Crusaders, some Stormhawks, a pair of Stormravens, a line of Predators, and a few other possible loadouts. Can you all help me determine which would be best for a high-power-level casual environment?

Salamanders want MSU. 10 man squads is a literal waste of the Chapter Tactics.

So I want multiple small units... how many do you think I would need? If I broke em' apart, I'd have 5 5 man squads. Think that would be enough?

Also, what is your opinion on the best vehicles to use for the remaining points (keep in mind the need for objective capturing games, but I'm sure this could be swapped out if needed)

sorry.... is that 4, 5man devastator squads with 4 heavy bolters each?

and 2, 5man dev squads with 4 lascannons?

error 1) no ablative wounds. if that's how you want to run your bodies that's fine, but I'd reduce the tacticals to 3x5 with Plas and Combi plas, then stick 5 bodies with bolters onto each devastator squad to protect the investment in heavy weapons... also a different chapter tactic would make more sense from the units you want to run, maybe imperial fists? or Ultramarines with the Strategem 'Scions of Guilliman'

GamerGuy

p.s, this army is gonna be boring as hell to play.... virtually no movement at all, slow to advance onto objectives.... I'd cut down to the 3x5 tacts then invest in a trio of razorbacks so you've got some manoeuvrability

Ok, so if I put 5 bolters on each heavy squad, that would be 680 for the 4 heavy bolter squads and 460 for the 2 las-squads... minus the extra points needed for the tact squads of 10 being brought down to 5 at 75 each, my point total would be 1,584 points total.

This would leave me with a Sentinel Lyons, 2 LT's, 4 10-man dev squads with 4 HB's, 2 with 4 lascannons, and 3 tact squads of 5 men with HB's

Seems like a hefty total so far... any units you think need to be cut, or should I focus on vehicles now? I could put in a land raider, some rhinos or razorbacks, or I even have close to enough for 2 stormravens

Another Idea would be to take out the lascannon squads and put in more high-damage vehicles

So after giving it some consideration, I have decided to make the Silver Drakes mimic the Salamanders on a more direct level. Though I am unsure about flame and melta weapons as of yet, I I have considered that devastator squads may not be the way to go, or to only have a couple. Some ideas which are more appealing to take advantage of the salamander's strategem for re-rolling hits and wounds are as follows:

-Have 4 to 6 5-man tactical squads with an anti-armor weapon (lascannon comes to mind), each with a razorback sporting either assault cannons or lascannons

-Have some predators

-Have a few dreadnoughts with lascannons and missile launchers

-(maybe) 2 10-man dev squads with 4 missile launchers (as they appear to be more tactically forgiving than HBs)

-Maybe a land raider

-Scouts?

If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know soon so I can put a possible list together. I'm going for versatility but without relying too much on assaulting enemies. I want a list which can handle hordes and vehicles they may have all in one.

Scouts! I have played few games with space marines but scouts were always gold, because they can deploy outside of your deployment zone. If you can manage to build 2 battalions (one with 3 scouts troops, the other with the tactical squads) you'll have a lot of command points and be able to promote your captain to chapter master (which is very powerful, especially if part of your army is stationary).

Keep in mind you will need to move to get some objectives, so yea, razorbacks make a lot of sense.

Ok, it looks like I should do a Brigade detatchment then. That would get me 9 CP off the bat, and would allow tact squads and scouts.

So far then, I'd have:

HQ:
1 Captain (Sentinel Lyons, 99 points)
2 Vanilla LT's (60 points each)

Troops:
4 Tact Squads (5 men with 1 HB) (75 points each)
3 Scout Squads (assuming 10 man? with vanilla loadout) (110 points each)
4 Razorbacks with HBs and Stormbolters (84 points each)

Heavy Support:
2 Dev squads (10 Men with 4 lascannons/squad)
(230 points each)

That brings me to a total of 1,645 points already... and I want to put in some more vehicle options

I wanted to see about putting in a couple dreadnoughts with Lascannons and Missile launchers, or some predators. Or even a land raider?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
A dreadnought with Missiles and Lascannons would be 145 points each, a destructor predator would be 159 points, an annihilator predator would be 190 points, and I don't know about a land raider yet.

Ok, so I've been reading around and found that scouts are good in 5 man squads. My question now is should I go ahead and make them bolter boys or give them sniper rifles? I have heard both that snipers are important and too overpriced/incongruent with tactics.

If I put in 3 squads of 5 scouts, that would give me an extra 165 points to work with, making the total number of points currently at 1,480. This could give me options for predators or dreadnoughts (or land raider if they are recommended.

With predators, I think I should have the autocannon/bolter pattern if used, as I already have 8 lascannons from the 10-man dev squads for tank hunting, and I could possibly have points left to field a single lascannon pred or a couple of dreadnoughts with missiles and lascannons.

What do you all think? I'd say my brigade is working out to be much more focused on versatility for beating hordes and armor when needed.
