I was wondering what folks consider to be the best value for money Start Collecting set for 40k. I was thinking beyond just numerical value. Do you ascribe value based on the fact it has your favourite models? Or does it offer a cost efficient way to pick up some units you find competitive? Or maybe if you buy 2 or 3 you have a nice well rounded army?

What's Dakkas thoughts?

Scion one is pretty good. Gives those sweet deep striking plasma squads notably cheaper and the taurox isnt all bad either. Commisar is bleh but at least it's not complete suicide to field any more. This is box you can easily take 3-4 to IG army.

Vigo. Spain.

Tau. Three commanders and 10 firewarriors, you can convert the ethereal to one fireblade. You can buy 2-3 and all will be usefull.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

For 40k without blending and kitbashing anything, I'd have to say that Nurgle Daemons is the best value. It's pretty much double what the box is worth as far as I can tell.

The Tau start collecting box is insanely good value. Everything is very usable including the crisis suits. The crisis suits can and should be run as 3 XV8 Commanders. Even if they aren't, the crisis suit weapons are still useful on coldstars. Fire warriors are strong, drones are always useful, and the ethereal is useful if you don't have one already. Kitbash a cadre fireblade or firesight marksman if you do.

I have 2 Archon start colleting boxes (still availble on line, or your FLAGS should be able to bring one in for you) and 1 Succubus one.

Its a great list. Fun, moves shoots assults and has some cool tricks.

I am going to get 1 more Succubus box. And some talos and Grotesques.

Old and new Dark Eldar boxes are good.
I don't think the CSM one is so great, although Helbrutes are better than they used to be.

Can't really comment on the others - I'm not collecting any other armies (yet...) so they're all essentially zero value to me

CSM is an okay value, but certainly not the best. It's kind of middle of the pack. (Which is saying something when you still get a free Terminator Lord basically)

Do all the SC! boxes come with the rules for all the models?

Yes and no.

A LOT of boxes floating around are from 7th ed. I know out of the 3 CSM boxes ive boguht, only one was from 8th.

And keep in mind you will still be missing out on some rules as they expect you to have the Codex too.

For value I would say Tau or MT, as just about everything is useful (short of Commissar). FW are expensive anyway so you may as well collect a few more suits. This perk is lost if you don't run them as Commanders or want to focus on Suits, but if you're going WYSIWYG for loadouts you will want a couple of boxes... Same with MT as you only get a couple of each special weapon per SC Box.

Unless you're playing matched play.

The xv8 Commander is absolutely allowed in matched play. The only difference between an xv8 commander and an xv8 crisis suit is the paintjob and maybe the head. Magnetize all crisis suits for 4 weapons and it shouldn't be a problem. I guess you could use bigger bases if you want them to match xv85 commanders.

Skitarii one's pretty good. I've bought 2 in the past from a retailer which had 20% off RRP, basically 2x free Onagers!

I was thinking about this as I hadn't answered it myself and I'm very fond of the Eldar one. It's not competitive, but it has some stunning models and showcases the whole spirit/wraith/undead aspect of Eldar that sometimes gets overlooked.

I picked up two of the new Eldar SC kit, and have one of the old one.

From a value POV you get a lot of stuff in it. None of the units are the latest hotness, but are all solid. The wraithlord, for being a fairly old kit, is a wonderful model to build with a ton of options.

My only real complaint about it is that it’s not a very good place to start collecting. But it’s a great expansion box.

In matched play you can only use one per detachment, that was what he was getting at.
You can't use them all.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Seconded on the Ad Mech one, I've got six of them, all before the rule of three.

the only start collecting boxes I have are Drukhari(new one) and Admech. I feel they both are good values and if you buy more than 1 you are well on your way to a solid foundation.

of the variosu Space Marine start collecting boxes I think the best one is proably the space wolf start collecting box, simply due to the sheer versility of the space wolf Pack kit. you can amke grey hunters, blood claws or wolf guard out of it, so if youu use it to make troops you've got a sprue of some great HQ bits.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

I recently started 40k again and picked up the start collecting box for a very reasonable 37 quid. I added to it a second war walker a box of guardians 10 avengers a serpent and a wraith seer and now I already have a very cool 1k army to play with.

I'd say Daemon boxes are great, as they come with well rounded choices and you can easily stack them. Especially Nurgle and Tzeentch, as they are favored by the rules.
