I heard that GW was going to create a new army... what ever happened to that?

Or did I just imagine that rumor?

I've always wanted to see Demiurg get models, but there's little hope of that left after all these years. I personally don't believe a new army is on the horizon at all there are no indications of it happening.

Eh they have always had models though. I assumed there was going to be a brand new army altogether introduced.

Could have been crossed wires concerning the Rogue Trader models coming to Kill Team.

there's been rumors fior awhile of a "Brand new race" but I've never given much though as we've not heard anything about em so if it was anything more then wishful thinking it's not come out. a new race would be ahcnayc hard to guess if it'd sell. why bother with that risk when instead they could create a new Imperial or Chaos army, there's a number of potentials mentioned in fluff but without rules in game, that'd likely sell better anyway

Genestealer Cults came out of nowhere, so they're not completely risk-adverse. A few of the boxsets (Forgebane and Kill-Team) don't feature Space Marines either, which is really OOC (it's still Imperials but hey, baby steps).

With that being said, I believe the Kroot standalone rumours more than I do a whole new Xenos faction. GW's idea of 'new army' is very liberally applied considering Death Guard and Custard Creams were marketed as such.

I think if there's any precedent for Demiurg it's in the success of Kharadron Overlords. By all accounts they sell extremely well - albeit to modellers, because nobody actually plays the army - and the joke about them being Squats sucked into AoS gets thrown around enough that GW probably have the idea planted in their heads. AoS also shows that despite 5371428 Imperial releases, there IS a lot of creativity on at least one part of the design team. I could really see them going wild with the Xenos Dwarf Tech theme.

GSCs though are a good example of what we should expect. not bramnd brand new things but rather stuff thats been around forever without rules and an army finally getting their own codex.

The Tau are a great source if GW really wanted to kick it into high gear, there are so many races mentioned as being part of the Tau GW could with a few releases make the Tau equal chaos for subfactions, or even the IoM.

Kroot, Vespid, Demiurg are a good starting place but there are a ton of others that are name dropped that could be fleshed out and used for a codex.

GW did do an aquatic race out of nowhere for AoS, they could take a risk on an unbefore-seen race for 40K.

However, I think there's more than enough factions for 40K that they don't nearly have enough time to give the factions that exist the attention they should.

It never ends well

There’s been rumors of a new codex, but watch it be Ynnari and leave everyone disappointed. Except those dirty space elves.

True but the thing is AoS is still young and they are trying to develop it into its own thing to distance it further from WHF. The release of things like kharadrons and deepkin make sense. 40k is kind of well fleshed out, but they need to start phasing out the old kits, and resin stuff. I've been waiting on plastic aspect warriors for what feels like a decade. Even the basic eldar guardians kit is showing its age, in terms of detail, sprue layout and use of space plus having all that flash and cleaning work on the heads is not optimal. There are a lot of models they need to release for the current 40k armies before any new faction is released.

I was hoping a brand new race like what they did with the Tau back in the day. Not a branch off of another faction (GSC, Kroot, Eldar armies etc...)

Like Rak’Gol.... that be tight.

You will likely never see Rak'gol as there is always the potential of legal action from FFG over IP issues that can just be easily avoided by making something else.

Currently the front runner for the possible new army from those willing to speculate about the rumor seems to be Ynnari. This would be a little disappointing as there are already 3 Eldar factions and the one faction that has the most fluff potential to take allies, Tau, don't have any to ally with. That's not to say I don't think Ynnari shouldn't be its own unique faction and I generally feel that any Xenos attention is good. I think an Eldar army also is less risky than full on alien in the eyes of GW. I mean they could have gone more alien with an aquatic army in AoS but I'm betting they went elf because they figured it would have more appeal.

I honestly don't think we'll see a brand new major faction though. I mean GW couldn't be bothered to make AdMech a major faction when they have the potential for multiple units and heroes. I think we're more likely to see something like a Ork mutation that makes them like Trolls, called Trorgs, that ally with Orks rather than Khrave, Hrud, or Xenarchs as stand alone armies.

Read up on them on the various 40k Wikis and you'll see why.

Should be no legal issues as they're in GW canon having been mentioned in the 40k rulebook and in BL novels.

the thing with an army like Rak'gol is they'd be 100% reliant on people commiting to an entirely new army. which is a big commitment and a bit of a risk on GW's part. a "branch faction" has the benifit of having a built in audiance, as people who play the faction it's tied too are likely to snag a few as allies.

GW didn't need people to start full custodes armies. every Imperial player snagging a box or two as allies for their guard/spacemarines etc made them money too

Now that Kill team is out of the bag, I think that will be used as a test market for anything new. A kill team kit is less risky than an army release; if the Kill Team kit sells well, it tells GW that we want an army. They add vehicles and characters to the kill team release, cobble together a dex and voila- a small, but playable army.

Call me kooky, but I'd love a Jokaero Kill Team. #SpaceMonkeys

And for the record, I thought Squat armies would be awesome if GW had kept them up- an entire army of bikes and war trikes with Living Ancestors in sidecars. Sweet!

Standalone Kroot would be cool too- there were a few Forgeworld kits, so there are already a few distinct units to build on.

Personally I'd hate to see a new race, and I'm even tired of seeing new factions, while older factions are making due with models which are between 10-15-20+ years old at this point. That to me is borderline insulting. I understand the business principles behind it, but I'd veto any new armies/races before the floundering oldies are given some work.

There was talk of it when 8th was released but we've not heard anything since. I figured it was going to be the Dark Mechanicus (or at least Forge World would do them) as the FW Index has some units with the Dark Mechanicus keywords.

They said once during the marketing for 8th that one loyalist would go traitor and one traitor go loyalist and a new army would be coming.

If that’s custodes, sisters or just a already existing army then it’s a big cop out, while what I think is a new army may be different to what they meant, it’s still a cop out if true.

Throwaway references in the background are a different animal than using someone else's ideas to make an army out of it. A lot would depend on how iron clad GW's contract with FFG was about claiming rights to all of FFG's creations in the 40K setting. They could be in a position similar to the Spawn comic was with the character of Angela, for instance. Even if FFG doesn't have a good leg to stand on, if they get backing from Disney (who have Rakghouls from SW) they can still do financial damage. It seems like it would be easier to go with something GW definitely owns so there is no possibility for additional costs.

Rak'Gol can easily be introduced as a CSM ally. They are suspected to worship Chaos in some form and they have been sighted trading with various denizens of the EoT on Sublime.

I wouldn’t say being a new army would be an obstacle- It’s not like everyone was knocking around Genestealer Cult models before the new kits dropped. Back in 5th the plastic Deldar reboot got a ton of people buying into a full army.

The old ones coming back would be cool, but they'd have to be too OP considering the lore. I'd like to see a silicone based species or a species created in sulphuric acid or maybe even bring back the cabal as an elite type army all different species where you play them kind of like deathwatch.
