I got my first box of Custodian Jetbikes yesterday, and while I've already got a couple of squads of standard banana-boys, I've always struggled to actually paint them.

Seems a bit weird, they're just all gold. That's the tricky bit, while I've followed Duncan's videos and other tutorials, I just can't seem to get the shades right, the highlighting doesn't work except for the last silver layer, at which point it just looks like a blobish line of silver over a layer of gold, no highlights inbetween.

I bought a couple of different Vallejo shades of gold yesterday as well, hoping that maybe airbrushing may produce some better results. Has anyone got any examples or sources on airbrushed Custodians?

just find a gold paint that stands out, dont limit yourself to just GW paint.
unless your painting for a competition, you dont need several layers of highlight to make a desent model on the table.

Spoiler:

this one i basecoated the gold whit airbrush, applyed a shade and repainted the raised areas whit a brush using the same gold as i basecoated it with.
the natural or artificial light combined whit the shade wash creates the highlights.

i used mystic gold from green stuff world and tamiya black panel line as the shadewash.
nothing else.

Brown as a basecoat for gold helps it really stand out too.

What you need to do is shade the deepest recesses blue.

Actually, if you're airbrushing, you could do a lot worse than follow this excellent guide from Oppenent Theory. He's painting a Stormcast, but it works on Custodes. It's how I'm going to paint mine.
