I typically play knights and marines, so I’m not that familiar with orders for guard.
Recently, I played someone that took quad launchers from forge world and the player
was giving them orders to reroll wounds on my knights and so on.
However after reading the codex and several posts here and elsewhere, i believe
that you cannot because the gun is a separate unit from the crew.
Additionally, it lacks infantry as a keyword.
Does anyone have a definitive answer about this?
It seems grey at the least, and i think i got cheesed.

You can not give orders to the gun. The crew can receive orders, but they can only use there lasguns.

Yeah your opponent cheated (be it deliberately or in error). The gun cannot benefit from AM Orders.

Doesn’t work that way. Logically, the crew fire the gun. However, in-game there’s no mechanical “fires the gun” interaction between the crew and gun... just two separate units that must remain near each other for the gun-unit to be able to fire. Any orders affecting the INFANTRY crew cannot affect the separate, non-INFANTRY unit that is the gun.

In defense of the other guy: That DID work in 7th. Probably just a mistake he made transitioning from 7th to 8th.

The gun can't receive the order of course; but certain stratagems will still work for similar effect.
Honestly its a terribly written data sheet. It has the Explodes rule, and does not explicitly state that it applies only to the gun, so you can have it explode when the crew die RAW, though no one would ever actually play it that way (well maybe one person would...).
