It's that time again. 2 days to vote on the theme for the next challenge round! This time, your options are:

Cutting Edge: Technology can tip the balance of any battle. Your entry should be something that deployed advanced weaponry or equipment to the battlefield, from the engineer manning an fearsome war machine to the Tau Commander in a state-of-the-art battlesuit.

Heatwave: Harnessed by all manner of combatants, via weaponry or wizardry, by dragons or demons, fire is near-omnipresent throughout civilisations. Your entry should include or represent fire or heat, in any form you see fit.

Above And Beyond: Every army has its exceptional, its elite, those who take the most dangerous tasks and achieve the most impressive results. Your entry should feature such characters, whether that's a single elite fighter or a squad of peerless veterans.

Practical Effects: The Technical Challenges (may) return! This challenge will see you adding some kind of 'special effect' to your entry, such as weathering, object source lighting, non-metallic metal or similar techniques.

While I'm here, I also want to give a shoutout to Dakka's other recurring painting challenge, the (usually) annual Nerdcademy Award run by Nerdfest09. The theme for this is 'More than meets the eye', and you can find out more here!

I voted for Cutting Edge, because Primaris Space Marines are as cutting-edge as the Astartes ever get and I've got plenty of them that need some paint.
Cutting Edge: I would probably do a unit of Hellblasters.
Heat Wave: I don't have a lot of fire-themed stuff, but I could perhaps do some Space Marines with Flamers.
Above and Beyond: Too many possibilities to name.
Practical Effects: Some of the advanced techniques are quite beyond me (like OSL and NMM), but weathering is something I wouldn't mind trying. I'd probably start with a Razorback or something similar.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Definitely up for the technical challenge this time around.

I voted for "Cutting Edge" as I'd like to paint an Infinity TAG for fun and variety. I would also have liked "Practical Effects" as I always wanted to give NMM a petty try and it would be just the reason to do so. I guess I'll pass on "Heatwave" and "Above and Beyond", though.

How about you overcharge the Hellblasters - plenty hot enough then!

I could get in on Cutting Edge, don't think I have anything for the other options at the moment.

Above and Beyond will be a great excuse to do up some more Vanguard Veterans.

Clearly a coincidence that "make a kill team" wins for the month of the Kill Team release. Looking forward to this one, and will have to enter.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

To be honest, I hadn't been following the KT release that closely so didn't realise it was out this month! But yeah, that should work out rather nicely.

Heatwave will get another go next month as it came second, and the theme for August is Above and Beyond.
