There are some models I like of the orks : Big Meks, morkanaut/gorkanaut, warboss grukks boss mob, Killa kans, and ghazghkull Thraka. Their airplanes and basic models are alright also i guess.

TBH I haven't played vs orks; haven't read much about them for that matter, and the stuff I've read thats good much less for that matter. I'm downsizing a lot of my armies (not successfully) in favor of using models I like over models that are "cheesey", and feel like the trashkan feel of orks would be an amusing addition.

Looking any opinions; mostly trying to get a feel for ork strategy, whats good/bad and what wins. Im not much of a horde guy- If i played orks it would be spamming the above units along with a few others if I needed to balance my army a little.

What's true for orks right now isn't going to be true in like a month when the codex comes out. Currently it's all boyz, boyz, and more boyz but there's no reason to assume that paradigm will be maintained (remember when Imperial Knights were unusable garbage? Yeah, not so much the case anymore).

Boyz will still be the thing. The new meta is 200+ models.

The only answer is to avoid spending money on ork any models until the codex has been released unless just looking for some cool models to build and paint.

Currently there is only one way to play orks and even hope for a win and that is drowning the board in ork boyz. From the list of things you do like, you seem to want to go more in the direction of a walker/mek army which is currently very disheartening to play due to how little damage they do and how easy they are killed.

Wait for the codex, give it a month or so to settle in, and then re-evaluate whether orks can provide what you are looking for. Currently, I can guarantee you that they do not.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Echoing this. I love my orks, but since they arnt very playable and the 1 build that is, isnt the most rewarding most of the time im stuck with my IG until the codex comes out so I would wait for that. That being said I bought a Gorkanuat simply because its a cool model even if it sucks, and boys and warbosses are probably not going to be a bad investment even in the new codex.

That being said if you are downsizing your collection, orks might not be for you . We tend to have....a lot of models

As bad as the Index is, it's still the best book Orkz gave gotten in a long long time. Seeing what they did with the Dark Eldar book revived hope for my Ork army.

My old Ork armies ideals are gone. I used to play 'Ard Boyz on trukks, backed by lootaz and Shoota boyz mobs. Right now you absolutely have to footslog in huge numbers, and I wouldn't even bother with Ork shooting.

Which is fairly sad in its own right, considering the only other book we have gotten in the last decade is the 7th ed codex

Orks are very strong in Shadow Wars Armageddon though.

Might be decent in killteam but it's not as good as SWA.

200+ models is the old meta. BAO was won by the following:

3 Plagueburst Crawlers
Winged Daemon of Nurgle
10 Blightlord Terminators
Foul Blightspawn
Renegade Knight
2 Armigers

That is 18 models.

Think P was referring to 200+ _Ork_ models :-)

Others' mileage will certainly vary.

GW said that two months ago and hasn't said anything since. And we still might be waiting for everyone to stop yiffing over Leman Russ for another month if SW go first once GW decides to come back to 40k.

Something nobody here has touched on. Orkz have little in the way of saves, to make up for this, you bring multiples of the same thing to the point it looks spammy, which is expected from orkz. The idea is that your opponent's tac list just didn't have enough of that one type of ideal firepower to remove all your models. With that said, if you have a favorite model bring it, bring lots of it, and protect it with a KFF or maybe a Painboy.

Ork Boyz have been a competitive meta because time typically can become a factor at these competitive events. I have personally found if you have the time your enemy will find a way to remove all your ork boyz and, just like a list featuring Killa Kanz, table you unless your opponent has made a terrible mistake. YMMV

In games where you might be able to shoot without a negative modifier bothering you, it can also be nice to have some shooting to slowly remove elements of your opponent's list featuring a weapon that will decimate your choice of SPAM.

40k 8th edition can have random enough game types that winning the game at objective placement and deployment should be your top concern shortly after picking your spam. It'll be better if you concentrate on how you can place things to force early CC with the bulk of your army. With that said, 40k the tournament meta seeks to eliminate a lot of the BRB's pre game skills with modified rules. Whatever the case, play the objectives, get ahead, and pray to Gork you just don't run out of gitz, but don't expect prayers to Gork to keep you from getting tabled just because you are ahead, because it won't, most of the time. (You are going to lose, a lot.)

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works.
