Anybody know any alternatives that are stronger, around the same size?

KR fanboy to the rescue:
-Just the cardboard, to fill with foam:
https://www.krmulticase.com/product/cases/KRQ
Quarter size card case -- (KRQ) : 270 x 205 x 70mm
-Softer case:
https://www.krmulticase.com/product/cases/AQ5-B
Aquilla5 (AQ5) : 280 x 210 x 80mm

Choose the option of Small Skirmish Games option, then pick the foam trays you want:
https://www.krmulticase.com/bespoke
"Your case will carry 0.25 KRU worth of trays" (half-height and half-width)

For foam, look at a pair of N4H or other ?4H trays. The ? part is the layout of the slots, the 4 is how many trays stack in a 1KRU full-sized case, and the H is half-width.
A single deep tray is a ?2H (it stacks 2 high and half-width in a full-sized 1KRU case)

Battlefoam also has some smaller cases made of EVA foam for pre-order, with a launch in September. One of them is even the same price as the official GW KT case.

Why not one of these small hardcases

I've always just bought a generic tool box, and AC foam. A bit of hot-glue later and I have a custom built container that holds an entire army in a much smaller space then any "official" army container I've seen.
The only downside is that I have to "puzzle piece" my models in the case, but it is more space efficient that way.

I was going to suggest Tabletop Tyrant. Their foam isn't amazing, but their prices are good - available easy on eBay.

What's wrong with the Kill Team carry case? Is there a general consensus that it's a bit rubbish or something?

I'd second plastic food containers, particularly if you're on a budget, pack it out with tissue or your own foam. As nice as Battlefoam, KR cases and the like are, they're not cheap.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

It isn’t hard plastic. The Killteam Carry case is only canvas with hard plastic corner support. I want something that has a chance of protecting my models in case I lean against it in my bag. Otherwise, I love the look of the Killteam case.

Thanks for the response. I think it's really nice looking too and was considering asking for it as a gift, but if it's not that useful, It's not worth it.

I can always get a hard case box and just find a suitable logo to put on it.

I have in the past used a NATO ammo box and had magnets on the bases of my models and toilet tissue. They're a little heavy for larger armies, but they're cheap from army and navy surplus stores.
