Must be doing something right.

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."

"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.

Its amazing what can be done when you get some one in charge that actually knows their target audience.

They are doing more right than wrong at this point for sure. No debate here.

At the end of the day is about this. Not being perfect, but keeping the balance positive for your customers.

But wait just for the posters that will come to say this is because customers with beaten-up wife syndrome or that "Don't know better"

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

The reality is that there is subset of weapons and units making life miserable for the poster boy marines. Players in the know spam these units/weapons, because they generally are good vs a variety of targets. But it's not so bad that it's hurting overall sales, clearly.

Alternatively, it is that the marines are playably good in most clubs and places, and balance is much closer than it's ever been in objective terms. Remember, something being 10% less effective doesn't mean it's absolute rubbish except in the absolutely most competitive of metas.

They are far more than 10% less effective, though. They are pure gak against players who know what they are doing. I think the actual marines themselves are probably worse than they have ever been since 2nd.

Of course Martel will step up to the pulpit to complain about...

Wow this has to be a record. It took 6 posts on a topic completely unrelated to SMs for someone to turn it into a SM complain thread

Anyways, GW is doing a good job so far I just wish they would not announce a codex is coming 3-4 months before it actually comes out... I mean yeah thats par for the course in previous editions but I was hoping for something quicker given the release schedule this edition

They need to make FW do their job, too. Update the rules properly, or get rid of FW altogether.

Actually, it's the opposite from before.

Used to be you'd not hear about a 'dex release until a week before it happened, at least from official sources. Anything else was rumor. At the time, people complained because they had no idea what was coming and couldn't make their hobby plans.
Nowadays, you hear about it too far in advance and the hype fades (and the lack of a firm release date kinda kills hobby plans anyways).

GW's best bet would be to have firm release dates announced with every 'dex announcement, but baby steps.

given the news and rumors thread are you not thinking they're taking door number 2 right now?

I think we're seeing the death of the "forgeworld is a separate arm of the expensive miniatures company with imbalanced rules who produce REALLY SUPER DUPER expensive miniatures with EXTRA CRAZY imbalanced rules for the serious collector!" business model starting right now.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

But Martel, just buy 3 of *insert 100+$ hideously overpriced resin model here* and *insert faction with terrible design flaw here* is perfectly balanced and competitive!

Well, this year alone they got me for a rulebook, 3 indexes, chapter approved, 5 codexes, 4 packs of data cards, a brand new Death Guard and Nurgle Daemon army, the Killteam book, and the usual paint and primer.

Compared to several previous years of the occasional codex and supplement.
