So a little mathhammer tells me that for a Vet Sgt in a Tac Squad a Power Axe is the way to go. But Axes don't come in the Space Marines Tac squad box.

There's one in the Assault Squad box, but if I buy an Assault Squad box it's because I'm building an Assault Squad and I'm going to give the Power Axe to the Assault Squad Vet Sgt.

Where did your Tac Squad Vet Sgts get their Power Axes?

Vanguard veterans kit. Tons of melee weapons in that kit. One kit has more than enough to outfit whatever you want. The Devestator kit has one as well

I don't. I tend to run my tac squads bare of CCWs. way I see it, if I'm using it I've made an error. that said a good source of close combat weapons for tac squads is the space wolf pack box

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Bits sites or see if anyone has some extra bits floating around. AoS players can be a good source for melee weapons for conversion use.

I looked on the GW site at the sprue for that kit. Saw a bunch of Storm Shields, Thunderhammers & Lightning Claw. Saw exactly ONE Power Axe.

The Horus Heresy line has a ton of power/chain weapons.

I ordered like 2 dozen chain axes just for a raining day.

There's also one in the Devastator box.

If you play other factions, you might have some axes lying around.

I wish my Exarchs could take axes...

Counts As, my dude. Just put the effort into the modeling.

That's where Axes are a little dangerous. Clearly, a bladed 1-handed weapon, so clearly a sword. But clearly long enough hafted to be glaive. Which is it again?

Counts-as on weapons work for most weapons, but I'd avoid axes bigger than a hatchet on DA Exarchs specifically.

I miss the Sword/Axe/Maul/Polearm generics we used to have.

Well the issue is, really...how many different loadouts on your Exarchs are you actually planning to use? If you're going for one-of-everything for each squad like a disorganized mess, yeah you have a point. As far as I know though, you only really take an Executioner on your Banshee if you're doing an upgrade at all.

No squad can have more than 1 Exarch. But we're way off topic here. Sorry to bring them up.

I preferred when there was just generic rules for a power weapon and you could model it anyway you liked without fear of confusion.

I think he means using an axe-statted weapon. It's often the best of the power weapons. +1 Strength, and -2 save is a good balance. It'd put the average Eldar at Strength 4, and the average marine at Strength 5 ---- giving both a bump in their dice when striking normal infantry models. The -2 save is still plenty good as well. I have the old Banshee exarch with an "executioner" which is the old power-axe model.

I actually WANT to play Space Wolves. I just prefer the "clean" look of the regular Space Marines models. I guess I'll just have to learn to deal with all the over the top wolfyness.

Or just use normal "clean" Marines models, and do the conversion work for the load outs.

Take a look at what I've been painting and modelling: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/725222.page

I reccomend MK III armor kits as they all come with chain swords, perfect for grey hunters. Really the only differance between the generic infantry of the space wolves an d "everyone else" is "everyone has a chain sword" and you get 2 special weapons instead of a special and a heavy in a 10 man squad.

If you like Space Wolves there's nothing indicating you need to adopt GW's styling. The original Space Wolves simply had the occasional viking hair, a few runes and some wolf pelts hanging from bolter handles.

You can absolutely do non-wolfy Space Wolves - go back to their roots.

"I reccomend MK III armor kits"

That kit DOESN'T come with a power axe.

I was speaking specificly for space wolf grey hunters... on an expanded explination etc.. someone looking to do space wolves would be well served in buying burning of properio and a single space wolves pack box, you'd proably be able to get a good 4 packs of grey hunters outta that easily. and have power weapons to spare

I used to get mine in the assault marine blisters and got many from troll mail order

I haven’t bought a new box of marines lately, last one was about 2010 and that was a SM battleforce

I think the space wolf specific bits wok better if they're used sparingly. Moderately mixing some wolfy bits with the rustic Heresy era armour marks will achieve a nice look.

Or if you want to do your own thing, nothing is stopping you from using SW rules for your homebrew chapter.

If you only need an axe here and there, there are enough kits with one, and your local meta should have people with a few spares.

If you need a ton of them, you could look for a dwarf kit or something, but that's a lot of extra plastic just to get axes.
