Subject: How is the Necromunda gang balance?

Is it decent or do some gangs usually have the upper hand over others? Are there specific match ups between certain gangs that are bad?
Trying to figure out what two gangs to start with...

Goliaths are the easiest to learn with as they are so tough.
Orlocks are middle of everything.
Escher are fast and poisonous so need some skill in positioning.
Van Saar are glass cannons so need some skill in positioning and shooting order.
Cawdor are new so ??
Chaos Cults are all about the numbers.
Not sure on Genestealer cults.
Venator can be whatever you make them.
I think the only unfair starting match up is Chaos Cults and Van Saar as the numbers are so uneven. All others should match up ok

Escher is a finesse gang and is kind of harder to play, but toxin got buffed so they are actually kinda competent now. Van Saar are very powerful, but are more elite and expensive so if you start taking losses or lose an important member of the crew then you're in trouble. Can't say much about orlocks, but they are good all around I guess. Cawdor are a cheap swarm gang, individually weak but swamp the enemy with multiple activations and fodder. Not a whole lot is known about the Cawdor overall though.
I don't really think you can go wrong with any of them, but you gotta think about playstyle. If you like to hang back and shoot and avoid confrontations then van saar is good. If you like to wade into melee then Goliaths and so on

Personally feel that Esher and van saar are top of the pile right now (tho haven't played Venators). Esher toxin weapons are very powerful. Van Saar dominate the shooting game and with superior armour and stupidly cheap shock weapons aren't terrible in combat either. Basically outperform orlocks at what orlocks want to do at every level.

venators are the best if you want to be a complete jerk. But realistically, no one should play you if you're rocking the 3 grenade launcher 3 boltgun 2 up to hit venator gang

Nah, I wanna go with the the "real" gangs, getting two, one for me and one for a friend so we can play without one roflstomping the other due to bad match

Yeah, all gangs are pretty well balanced, no obvious crap gangs.
If your table sucks, the power of the shooty gangs will increase exponentially. That's van Saar, orlock, Escher.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |
