Plummeting Black Templar Thunderhawk Pilot

So my deff skuls warboss is nearly complete. He's mostly painted, the barrel on his shoota is drilled (first time I've ever done that to a model), I know what I'm doing for the base, but something is missing. I suddenly realised what was missing. A cap!
Does anyone know any in depth tutorials for how to make a crusher cap? I've already tried and erm....the end result was rather unsightly.

I have, and will probably buy some, but I dont want to tear the head off my warboss and paint a new one, or do that to any other of my orks. Id rather be able to make yhem, or at least one for my warboss.

piece of thin plasticard or lead sheet for the shady bit, greenstuff the top then lead strip for the strap. Could also use rolled-out then cut the shape greenstuff for this.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

I made one of those for a friend back in the day (see below). It's not all that hard to do:
1: Do the visor first by putting a strip of green stuff over the head with enough extending to the front to sculpt the visor. Any green stuff on the head is just to have a solid base and can be messed up as much as you like.
To sculpt the visor, put a finger nail thoroughly drenched in water (or, if you prefer as some do, covered in vaseline) below the strip of green stuff. This is important because your finger supports the green stuff while you work, and seeing to it that the green stuff does not stick to it is important. With your finger underneath, you can flatten the top to the thickness you like. Then you make a crescent shaped cut around the front to finish the shape of the visor. Due to the curvature of your fingernail, it should slope down towards the sides without any extra work. Once done, you get your finger out and perhaps to minor corrections with your sculpting tool in case the green stuff sticks in spite of the water or vaseline.
You let that cure properly.
2. Next up you do the ring shape on top of that. Just put a blob of green stuff of appropriate size on there and flatten it to get a cylinder. Use a sculpting tool to make the sides smooth. The top does not need any such attention and keeping it a little rough allows for better grip when you do the cloth peak.
Then let it cure.
3. You do the underside of the cloth peak similar to 2. above. Put enough green stuff on there that there's an overhang, with a lot more to the front than the back so it properly slopes. Smooth out the sides and don't worry about the top. It's best to use your sculpting to push the blob back inward above the ring just a little bit to get a recess there.
Let it cure.
4. Put green stuff on the top, press it flat and cut off any excess around the sides. Depending on how you built it up in 3, you'll get a flat or curved top.
Done.
