Hi all

I dug out my old Chaos army from when i was quite young

I have
3x bikers, 8x iron warriors, A unit of korne berzerkers
6 plague marines
8x night lords
A korne guy on a juggernaught
5 raptors
Abadon the despoiler

Is this pointless combination or is there anything salavagable? Not sure if i can mix and match gods / factions?

You can mix and match, but the benefits of doing so are scant and the drawbacks can be severe.

Lords on Juggernauts currently only exist in an Index and will likely cease to exist, in game terms, soon.

Abaddon is mostly 'armless. Nah, he's quite good actually but I wanted to make a bad joke.

Your collection looks like a Black Legion list in sheep's clothing to me. I'm fairly sure that Abaddon's Mark means that you can make either the PM or KB Troops, so you've got a Battalion already.

Are they painted? More or less you can field all of that in a generic Chaos Space Marine army, but some of the elements will lack their buffs due to a lack of synergy.

I'd be more concerned about what weapons they're armed with and if they fit legally into units/datasheets.

Eeer, what? No. You don't get troops cult marines from marks, only from legion, and black legion ain't one to do so.

The list you have seems like a core that CAN be built on. Zerkers are nice, bikes ain't bad, juggerlord may be index only, but even if ever phased out if can simply be a bike lord count as without issue.

BL is not exactly great, but abbadon is pretty handy.

The main problem, is the scattered legions.
You can probably use them all as "count as black legion", as getting others to work under them is hardly out of character. But personally I'd consider making them uniform from one legion. Probably BL so you can use abbi, but alpha, WE and renegades would be decent for this collection.

Quite. My brain is addled with at least seven different versions of the rules.

Open play would let you play all of that as an army until you find your feet and get an idea of where you want to go with it. Explain to your opponents why your are doing it and they should be happy to help out and bring a similar sized force for a fun game or two. Get the codex and look at what you like and where you want to go. Also. And this is the best advice I can give. DONT LISTEN TO ANY ADVICE IN HERE! (No offence meant here before anyone kicks off) This site is very skewed towards competitive gaming, not totally but it is. If that is the way you want to go then fine but save your money and play the game a bit before you buy an army.

It's a legal army.
Black legion:
Hq: Abaddon, Juggerlord
Troops: 5 csm, 5 csm, 5 csm
Elites: zerkers, plague marines
Fast attack: raptirs, bikers

You'll even get a batallion 5 cp bonus.
As for the power level of this list, it's expectedly below average but it can be good enough for casual games.

Repaint the Iron Warriors and night lords, or repaint abbadon and play him as a Terminator lord if you want to switch. Maybee ask for some test games at your FLGS and ask if you can play with "count as".
I reccomend you to look through the Codex and which legion / renegade trait you want and which stratagems.

I know this is very nooby, but the gods have nothing to do with the mix on the field? The legion you pick helps to define your army via colours?

Guessing you can pick any one of the maby legions regardless of god links like korne berzerkers or plague marines?

Yeah, basically.

You build our army out of detachments and each detachment works best if it has a single allegiance, like all Black Legion or all Night Lords or whatever.

As I was rightly corrected, if your legion is one of the 'cult' legions then you can take 'cult' troops, like Plague Marines for Death Guard and Berzerkers for World Eaters, as Troops.

You can mix and match inside a detachment, but each detachment has a certain benefit which you lose if you aren't mono-allegiance. There's nothing to stop you taking a World Eaters detachment and a Death Guard detachment, for example, though.

The most basic detachment is the Battalion, which is like the old FOC/CAD. As koooaei points out, you have a Battalion already.

Black Legion trait is actually very good. It makes your Marines much faster and Abaddon has a supremely good warlord trait for when your advancing Marines get stuck in combat. Thankfully with the new rules it makes sense to tool up squad leaders so you can actually take mixed role squads and have them contribute more rather than wasting points on what if scenarios.

I'd say go Black Legion and see how you like it!

Re. the Black Legion, the modern fluff is that they are a mishmash of guys from all nine traitor legions fighting together under Abaddon's banner. So you can keep your Iron Warriors and Night Lords models as they are and just maybe paint some of their armour panels black with the BL eye symbol to show their new allegiance. Or paint them entirely in BL colours with their old legion markings 'defaced' with the BL eye painted over them in blood or something.

Actually, that just gave me an idea for a new CSM Kill Team: one member from each of the 9 legions, with hints of their original heraldry peeking out from under their hastily repainted black armour, undertaking missions to prove their loyalty to Abaddon...

No, keep those parts. That's my point. The explanation can be that they've recently joined (or been press-ganged) by Abaddon and have basically just hastily repainted their armour. That's actually more faithful to the modern fluff for the BL than making them all look generic (or like former Luna Wolves / Sons of Horus, because only a handful of those guys survived long enough to become BL).

Although, personally, I hate the winged helmets and nobody in my Night Lords army has them. That's just personal aesthetic preference, though. A NL marine who joins the BL doesn't need to cut his wings off.

No need. Visuals are not mechanicaly constraining as long as it's clear what you are.
If the paint job make them clearly NL , and it can't be easily confused for NL, the fact they got NL parts is no issue.

Now, if you army had both BL and NL at once, and some were BL that looks like NL without clear indication who is who, that would face been an issue.


And yes, any legion can have zerkers, plagues, etc. Just thier "native" legion got a troop variant.

Do note though, death guard and thousand sons are NOT standard legions, have thier own codcies that are completely different, and are not an option for your model list as they can't have many of these models.

The death guard (pure nurgle) is really standing out to me...

Also addadon is a no go and berzerkers obviously.

So take a CSM detachment and a DG detachment to begin with.

Perfectly legal, no loss of the command benefits.

In the alternative, it doesn't sound like you'll be going to the ITC any time soon so just run the vanilla CSM and Berzerkers as Plague Marines, Abaddon as Typhus etc. etc. I doubt anyone will care overly at this stage so long as you're consistent.

Khorne Juggerlord could be a counts-as Biker Lord, leading a Nurgle Vanguard Detachment from C:CSM, which has both raptors and bikes.
