Ok so I think I must be blind or something, but I can't for the life of me find any restrictions on the number of a certain model when it comes to building a roster. I know for an actual Match Play game, your Kill Team has several restrictions on it, but I was wondering if there are restrictions when making a roster? Like say can I have 2 TS Aspiring Sorcerors or 6 IG Special Weapons Gunners?

I ask because me and my friends are getting into the game and my friend likes to min-max their squads, as well as "side-decking" between matches and whatnot, so I know this question will eventually come up. From what I gather from reading tactics articles online, every "squad" is limited to just one, but the only real rule I find on that is when you're actually building a Kill Team. Since, as I understand it, members can be permanently killed between matches having a few redundant models (or just models of the same type kitted out differently) would be tremendously useful.

If this is spelled out somewhere in the book, please point me to it (I am not being sarcastic, I really do want to know because I feel like it is written in there and I'm glossing over it. it's actually kinda frustrating for me.). Otherwise, is it possible to have multiples of a restricted model on my command Roster as long as I still adhere to the limit when I actually make my kill team?

There are only 2 limitations that are noted in the Core Rulebook.

A. If you are playing a Campaign, your first team for your first mission must be built with a Command Roster that is no larger than 12 models and no smaller than 3.

B. If you are playing Matched Play, your Command Roster may not exceed 20 models (and may not be smaller than 3 models).

Kill Team absolutely encourages 'side decking' and 'list tailoring' to an extent. Some armies, like Deathwatch and Grey Knights, will have a hard time filling out Command Rosters, while others like Tyranids, Orks, and Astra Militarum can fill up a Command Roster very quickly and still not have all of their options.

You absolutely can take multiple Aspiring Sorcerers, as you have noted, taking one as a Leader and one as a Combat specialist, for example, allowing you to tailor your actual Kill Team when you play the game.

The only other restriction you need to be aware of is that when you do build your Kill Team, you MUST have a Leader and you can have up to 3 specialists, and you cannot have more than 1 of any kind of specialist in a Battleforged Kill Team.

So it would be fine to, say, have 10 of the members of my roster be Special Weapons Gunners (from IG) and have them all armed with a variety of special weapons to deal with any sort of potential enemies, allowing me to spam grenade launchers in one round and then spam flamers in another?

Also what would this mean for stuff like the Infantry Squad Gunner and Special weapons Gunner? From what I can tell they're more or less functionally identical, so the only real distinction would come up is during making your team

i.e: You have 1 Guardsman Gunner and 9 Special Weapons Gunners. In the first match this would let you have 4 "gunners" since you get 1 for the infantry squad and 3 for the Special Weapon Squad. But the Guardsman Gunner gets killed in the first round, and all subsequent rounds you can only have a total of 3, since none of the remaining ones are Guardsman Gunners.

I hope I'm understanding this correctly. This game is looking to require a lot of strategy, both in the pre-game roster building as well as the actual game itself, which is a major plus for all of us. But such things is also easy to mess up. Thanks.

In Campaign play, you can add new models to your Roster immediately before every mission, but you must then play them in that mission.

So, even if Jon Smith, Guardsman Gunner, dies in a game, his identical twin brother, Don Smith, can play in the next one, although Don won't have any of the experience that Jon had.

In Matched play, models don't die between games, so you can play whatever models you want.
