When should it be modeled? I've noticed even GW is inconsistent with this. GKs are the only Termies that seem to always have it.
I would expect Termies with storm shield wouldn't have it, but GW does seem to add it to them....sometimes

So it is purely decorative and therefore optional or does it have a purpose and should be modeled to represent something rules-wise
Isn't is supposed to generate their 5++?

IIRC the 5++ is just part of the armor. or possibly the crux on their shoulder pads. (though other terminator armor doesnt have it so eh)

its pretty much decorative at this point.

looks great for certain factions like black Templar though.

I believe they use it on a hand full of models from space hulk and some other snap fit guys.

I also find it interesting that kits like the SW Wolf Guard and GK terminators include 2 sets of the things. 1 "plain" set for each model and a fancy gilded set for more Elite of the Elite like Paladins.
Yet in many of GW's own photos, the shield is not present on the model.

I always wondered why they were on the blackreach termies

I’ve never used them on anything besides GKs
That's probably the route I'll go as well.
I currently have 1 GK, 1 Deathwing, and 1 Wolf Guard termie. The GK is the only one with the mini-shield
I've ordered a regular TH/SS termie that will be a Salamander Firedrake and was trying to determine if I'll use the shield. Since it will have the SS, probably not.
