So this week I decided to get myself some better terrain. I am currently using a mix of terrain, most of it homemade buildings made out of packing foam. Looking to retire the foam. I already have the terrain from the original Renegade Knight box modeled into one building. I picked up the Sector Imperialis terrain from the Kill Team box and an Administatum. Anyone know how many buildings I can make out of these two kits? I looked at the pics from Gw for KT and its hard to judge how much is really there. My goal is to have enough terrain for a 6x4 table.

depends on how big a building want. From the kill team box you get a decent size building and a smaller corner section. Both can be combined to make a larger three story building. The terrain is pretty flexible if you wanted to combine it together you could make a fairly large structure.

The pics on the Kill Team were giving me a little confusion. They show individual pics for a mid -sized build and corner like you said, but when they show everything on the gaming mat it looks like a lot more then that. So basically I have 3 mid-sized buildings and a corner pieces or 2 mids and a large building. Is this a good start? What else will I need. My goal is to have a good amount of LOS blocking terrain but also for it to be fair.

Thanks for any input, when I Said I picked up the terrain, I haven't actually recieved the shipment so I can't look at it in person yet.

Little update here, I went ahead and bought another 1 and 1/2 boxes of sector imperialis "ruins". Now I should be able to have something for each 2x2 section of board, 1 larger building, 2 mid-sized ones and some ruins for the rest. That a decent start?

Sure! I got a huge box of manic stuff to combine with hand crafted walls plus a collection of gw parts and wall sections and arches and so on... So the plan here is to have fun freehanding terrain by stretching out the plastic parts so to end up with some complete plastic kits, some hybrids and some complete hand made pieces to give a range from operational relatively new constructs to ruins partly reclaimed by nature to natural settings like forests and hills and crumbling rock walls and so on..

In the Kill Team box you get:

1 large two level piece
1 medium two level piece
Quite a lot of corner pieces

You can stack up most of the bits into one large building, making it three level. Or you can spread everything out in which case it covers a pretty decently sized area. Or a bit of both. It is quite a lot of stuff though, I was very pleased.

There are pros and cons to this modularity for 40k though. The major con being that 40k ruins only really work properly on a base, which is fiddly to do if you want to keep the modularity, though by no means impossible.

Guy at FLGS has the Kill Team box, pretty decent terrain haul in there, though it appears to have a few "caps" for ruined columns you would need to leave off to be able to stack them.

as for bases, I find myself wondering if hardboard cut to roughly the right range of shapes and sizes, a bit of sand, painted suitably colours and drybrushed simply to stand ruins on would be enough, you could leave a line without sand where the walls go if you really wanted to - which makes removing the ruin to move models then putting it back onto its base easier, also easier storage, and the bases alone can be used as "rough ground" in other games

I was thinking along similar lines of making a base for the ruins. 5mm foamboard might be better than hardboard as it is lighter and easier to cut but still reasonably strong.

have tried foamboard for bases, trouble it the stuff warps too easily (though painting both sides helps a lot) and lacks rigidity, it is seriously easy to work with though and I find its good on top of hardboard for a bit of variation in height, easy to chamfer the edges of and similar.

hardboard as a base with a foamcore "pavement" the building sits on could work nicely, maybe a slightly raised area for the actual building, also allows the buildings "floor" to be modelled with holes and craters.

have some terrain arriving with the conquest thingy and need to get the few CoD ruins I have based up so will have to experiment

Well, to get enough terrain for a 4x6 you'll need more. If we break a 4x6 table into 2x2 sections (making 6 sections), each section should have 2-3 pieces of terrain IMO. One piece per section is pretty sparse. What you've got probably is about 2 sections worth of table space. One big piece (Galvanic Magnavent and Larger Kill Team building), two medium (Kill Admin + Smaller Kill Team), and some extra scatter. That makes for 2 significant terrain pieces per section with some extra cover.

I recently bought a bunch of the Kill Zones, and the container box set is a good deal - 6 containers, the 3 servo hauler items and a ton of barrels/boxes. The containers are great scatter terrain that block LOS, can be stacked or laid out whichever way. What I plan on doing is having the containers 'loose' so I can use them however, but making fuel and ammo depots out of stacked barrels/boxes on MDF bases. I think one of these boxes can cover 2 sections of the board pretty decently.

The Sector Mechanicus Kill Zone isn't as good, but it will fill a single section nicely and IMO worth the money.

Most of the other new terrain sets are a single large-ish building and IMO overpriced. The death world kill zone is OK value in terms of amount of terrain, though IMO the pieces are basically poor scatter terrain - no LOS blocking, no elevation, they're just pretty. If you have a lot of money to throw at it, the Imperialis Sanctum and Basilicanum are gorgeous pieces, though I'd want to bulk up the upper level floorspace of the Sanctum to hold more minis.

Consider buying a second Kill Team box as well. You're basically getting 2x Administratum + Sector Imperialis Ruins for the same cost and a bucket of minis and floor tiles for free - or you can sell those off to someone else.
