I'm trying to plan my first army and they're going to be the night lords, I am trying to replicate the hard/hitting fast attacks they're known for, wondering if this was a good start:
15x csm I plan on breaking in to 5 man squads

5x warp talons

1x hell brute

1x Night lord chaos lord

3x chaos bikers

Also I was wondering what paints I should buy to paint them properly

Also curious as to folks' Night Lords advice.

3,000
2,000
Kill Team (2,000 in progress)
Bolt Action Late War Germans: 2,000+
Bolt Action Late War Brits: 2,000+
Bolt Action Late War US Airborne: 1000

I don't play Night Lords in 40k, but I am working on slowly building up a 30k army of them so I can try to help with how I paint them.

Base with Kantor Blue, then dry brush Hoeth Blue. Wash with Drakenhof Nightshade. Lightning bolts are Hoeth Blue mixed with white, then white at junctions. Red is Khorne Red and Wazdakka Red. Blood for the Blood God is almost mandatory for the Night Lords.

Edit: This is the best image I have to demonstrate how I painted my Night Lords. Hope it helps

Ok, well ehm, do you want some competitive advise or some semi competitive advise or pure fluff?

Because Fluff would be: Raptors everywhere.

Semi competitive: Would be replacing your CSm with cultists (they are the better Cp generation/ hold flag units, bonus points since they are 1 x recyclable and can outflank)

Competitive: count as alpha legion.

OK that out the way, if you want to play as fluffy as possible, with as much -ld for the enemy as possible you will need to go the way of Nurgle. Since the icon of despair gives another -1 to ld, the base trait of the night lords gives -1 ld and then raptors give -1 ld.

You will also need alot of CP since you have a decent stratagem that you can use to give your enemy another -1bs against a unit in his shooting phase.

That out of the way i think the following could technically work:

(assult focused detachment, yes i forgot the name)
HQ:
Chaos Lord: Jumppack, Pair of energy claws (free relic, the claws of the dark hunt) 105 pts

Elites:
Hellbrute: Reaper autocannon, missile launcher:112 pts

Assult:
10 Raptors: icone of despair, nurgle, champion with energy fist: 192 pts

10 Raptors: icone of despair, nurgle, champion with energy fist: 192 pts

5 x Chaos Spawn: 165 pts.

Battalion detachment:

HQ:
Chaos sorcerer: Jump module, Nurgle, Psy: Misama and prescience. 114

Daemon prince, Slaanesh: Hellforged sword, wings, Psy: Delightfull agonies aswell as warptime 180 pts.

Troops:
5 CSM 65 pts

5 CSM 65 pts

5 CSM 65 pts

Transports : 2 Rhinos 2 x inferno 166 pts

Support:

5 Havocs: Champion with combi plasma : 4 plasma guns: 130 pts:

Total so far:

1551 pts:
Missing key units which are good regardless:
Kyborgs

Potentially don't buy to much raptors, since they are still massively overpriced atm, additionally give them not energy fists if you get kyborgs since they do better AT and this was a stopgag measure.
Good hunt

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Thanks for the advise, I want to be at least semi-competitive, but being as close to fluff as possible. I'm sorry for the noob questions, but how do the weapons/items and icons work? Do they come with the models or do I buy those separate some where? Also I should get 10 raptors in stead of 20?

Equipment and icons for that matter are bought seperatly, especially the more powerfull equipment, and can be done if a unit has a option for that.
If you want semi competitve you might cut down on the Raptors and replace some CSM with Cultists (buy a box of cadians, carefully make the muzzle vertical and call it a day for autoguns, aswell adding some bits and cutting away the Eagle).
Reason for that is that cultists have atm a Stratagem for 2 cp to recycle and outflank, something particulary powerfull since a cultist squad can include up to 40 models.

Kyborgs , especially slaanesh kyborgs can put out a lot of hurt, with their weapons are also shock infantry so they would fit.

BTW: 40 k can sometimes be complicated so feel free to ask, you should generally find someone here or in your FLGS that can explain stuff.

I don't know if I have any stores in my area, but I'll see. Where can you normally buy them? From gw or forgeworld?
