Another thread going around on your first army love.
This one in a different direction. What an army you had but gave up or lost? How/why did it happen? Do you regret it? Would you start all over again?
For me, it was a necron army i got off a friend and added a little to it in 7th ed. I so enjoyed it, painted them up in the classic terminator chrome and red eyes played as a silver tide.
I was strapped for cash a few years ago around christmas time and the missus said my 40k junk needed culling. So the crons went to ebay. I sort of regret it now. It was necessary at the time but i still wish i had them.
If i had the money and the time, id probably start collecting them all over again. Alas i dont have the time and money is better saved for sisters release.

I had a couple of Necrons. I started them after my first SM army but then I leave the hobby and sold my SM army. Those Necrons disappear and till today I have no idea where they are.
Yes, no more love for my Black Templars and less for my Necrons.

Daemonhunters
Played mainly as an inquisitor led stormtrooper force with a single unit of GKT, an assassin, and gradually more and more allied sisters (originally a seraphim squad to fill in for the DH's missing fast attack).
Throughout the power escalation of 5th they became less and less viable compared to the sororitas element, and then 5e GK happened and turned them into super-powerful ultramarines that just weren't any fun to play with or against.

Gotta be Eldar for me. They were my 3rd army after Nids & Necrons. I've bought, built, played and sold so, so many armies over the years (often the same army several times like Necrons), but I still have some of my first Eldar models and although some units have come and gone in my collection, the "Army" is still the same in scheme & theme.
There's just something about "slightly better than humans" by nature. Space Elves are pretty cool and I think they have some of the best aesthetics in 40K.
I'm still a bit miffed that 8E took away my main Troop option as Jetbikes are what got my into Eldar back in 4E. The theme has always been "no boots on the ground" as my warband is so arrogant that they do not like stepping foot on alien soil. 8E forces me to go against this theme for the sake of a competitive list (i.e one with enough CPs to last past 2nd turn), but at least I can still put together a fun list with Windriders.

Orks. They were my break out army in 40K, back in the 2nd edition days. Once they got Gorka Morka'd, I gave them up, and haven't been able to go back since. The first was the greatest love, and greatest hurt.

Probably my old Iron Warriors (although I am redoing them now). I had a few nice conversions that I wish I still had (daemon prince, dreadnought and a huge siege mortar based off a giant WWII Karl Morser kit). Ended up getting rid of all my 40K minis, but here I am again.

Iron Warriors in 3rd edition. They were the second army I started, and I thought I would love them, but I just didn't have the heart for it. I came back to Chaos later, going with Black Legion, but I'll likely always keep the melancholy of the Iron Warriors away from my collection.

For me it would be my 1st imperial guard army. I painted them up in digital snow camo Vehicles and infantry. I put a lot of time and effort into them (note this was middle of 5th edition) I took them to a few games but did not really like how guard played preferring my orks or space marines. Somebody loved the paint and offered me significantly more than my investment plus a large profit more than covering any hourly rate I could make at the time. Sold the army and paid for multiple months of rent in advance. looking back I did nto really need the money and no longer have the time to dedicate to making an army look like that again .

Astra Militarum. I love the look, the mod possibilities, the sheer amount of stuff that you can drop. Unfortunately, you are pretty much accused of excess cheese if you win, no matter how suboptimal a list you ran. It eventually broke me and I sold the faction. I still drool over chimera/hellhound mods.
I went to Space Marines instead, they aren't as much fun to mod but people don't complain if I win.

Don't let others get you down. If you like something, people calling it cheese will eventually stop. Sooner or later, everything bad is cheesy again.

Orks, a lot of fun but it can be a depressing series of losses between the odd chink of light in the form of a win

I started with Salamanders. It was back in 2012 when I read some of the BL Salamander Fiction, that I became obsessed with the chapter. Three years later I found a group to play with and bought my first army, and then about 15 months later I promptly traded my Salamanders for Imperial Guard. Single biggest 40K mistake I've ever made. So much so, that I recently started rebuilding them again.
