As a new player to WH40k, I've no idea where to start. Originally I had wanted to run some CSM, but I found out I don't want to paint a fethload of cultists So, I went with eggs in 1 golden GOLDEN basket. I know to be semi-competitive I need to run like 6-9 jet-bikes. Eventually I will buy those jet-bikes, but if I'm doing this(and I am doing this) it's for fun factor and to be the only one in my area running Custodes. I will however accept a psyker unit or two from outside the Custodes because they DO lack that type of tactic (outside warlord trait). So, I'm asking with a MAX of 3 to 6 jet-bikes and adding in 1-2 psykers (however we can) help me build a Adeptus Custodes army that is semi-competitive or will AT LEAST put up a fight/annoy the feth out of my opponent.

Now, as I currently suck at painting, I will semi-assemble them, but will not paint them. I have roughly 50ish random DND minis I got out of a box from a garage sale for like 6 bucks. I'm going to practice on them until I feel comfortable enough to paint my Custodes. This also being said, I'll probably be running Orkz too when the new Index comes out, but until then Custodes will be my time killer and army choice.

If you stuck around through that slog, thank you. I will start this list off, i've no idea what kind of formations they can take to maximize CP(they need it), but I know where to start.

Warlord - Shield-Captain on Dawn eagle jetbike with a salvo-launcher and lance with Praetorian plate relic. - for 175

Any help is appreciated and as I get them/assemble them and paint them I will try to take pictures and upload them to here!

So around my patch in the uk there are a few Custodes players almost all exclusively running jetbikes. They tend to have a guard battalion with either knights or blood angel smash captains. That being said I think that's not the only way to run them.
I would avoid the troop choices as they're just too expensive for what you can do with them. The Vexilla with the -1 to hit banner seems pretty handy if you don't get first turn. And the terminators seem to be a pretty safe choice as they're definately much tougher that normal termies.
If it was me I would run them alongside some bloodangels scouts and smash captain and a librarian. Plus maybe a Castellan or Gallant knight for some extra though anti tank.

It's hard to maximise CP when playing Custodes unless you take a Guard Battalion. However, there's a general feeling that the Jetbikes and Guard Battalion will be changed in the next edition of Chapter Approved, so any advice may not last long.

Something you could consider is a Custodian Outrider detachment in a Guard army, you could get 9 Jetbikes and a Captain in there, but it's only +1CP. Alternatively take a Custodian Battalion of 3x3 Custodes, 2x Captains on Bikes and the rest of your Jetbikes. It'll be more expensive but will net you more CP.

Painting them isn't that hard. If you want to go all gold I'd recommending airbrushing them with Vallejo Glorious Gold, then a heavy wash with GW brown wash, focusing on staining the flat areas more than the recesses.

So Custodian 3x3 i'm assuming thats 2 spears 1 S&B, but im unsure on what the actual units are called?

And I'm just starting out painting and haven't invseted 200+ bucks into an airbrush so i'm sticking with brushes and spray paint cans for now. Think i could Gold Primer them, then layer then out with a gold or two THEN wash?

The basic units are just Custodian Guard, 2x Spears and a Sword/Board is a good way to go.

Layering with gold would probably do the same outcome but I'd imagine it'd be hard to get nice thin layers.
